The Varna-asrama Social System

2010 February 8
by staffmember

Srila Prabhupada: “Now, God says, maya srstam: “This varnasrama system is given by Me.” So how can we refuse to follow it? that means we are denying the real religion. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam: [SB 6.3.19] real dharma, real religion, means the order given by God. And God says, catur-varnyam maya srstam guna-karma-vibhagasah: “For the proper management of human society, I have created these four social divisions, based on people’s qualities and actions.” So you have to accept it.”

Varnasrama-dharmathe Vedic social system, which organizes society into four occupational divisions and four stages of life (varnas and asramas).

There is a natural system of social organization which can bring about a peaceful society where everyone is happy. This system is described in the timeless Vedic literature of India and it is called Varnasrama Dharma.

The purpose of the Varnasrama social system is to provide a structure which allows people to work according to their natural tendencies and to organize society so that everyone, regardless of their position, makes spiritual advancement. read more…

“This is a solid, genuine Movement for the total spiritual Rejuvenation of the human Society”

2010 February 8

February 8, 1969, Los Angeles, California: Dear Mr. Jim Doody, Please accept my blessings. I am very glad to read your letter of February 3, 1969, and I am also glad to learn of your very sincere desire to serve Krishna. Surely He will save you.

Material entanglement is no problem; if Krishna was not so powerful that He can easily undo our material entanglement then there would be no need to follow the path of Krishna Consciousness. Krishna has given His instruction in the Bhagavad-gita that one should simply surrender unto Him, and immediately He takes charge of solving all of the problems of life. So if you decide to surrender unto Krishna, and if you are sincere of purpose, there is no problem of your life.

2010 February 8

The three volume Make Vrindavana book was compiled by Gopinatha Acarya Prabhu (initiated 1973) following his two year expulsion (due to philosophical differences) from ISKCON’s New Govardhana farm community in Australia. During that time he went to a public library and spent his days compiling all of Srila Prabhupada’s teachings on varnashrama. He spent his nights sleeping under a tree. After he was done compiling the book, he returned to New Govardhana, and was allowed to stay.

“In Kali-yuga, those who are intelligent perform the Sankirtana-Yajna”

2010 February 8
Lord Jagannatha

Lord Jagannatha

SB8.16.61: This payo-vrata is also known as sarva-yajna. In other words, by performing this sacrifice one can perform all other sacrifices automatically. This is also acknowledged to be the best of all ritualistic ceremonies. O gentle lady, it is the essence of all austerities, and it is the process of giving charity and pleasing the supreme controller.

PURPORT

Aradhananam sarvesam visnor aradhanam param. This is a statement made by Lord Siva to Parvati. Worshiping Lord Vishnu is the supreme process of worship. And how Lord Vishnu is worshiped in this payo-vrata ceremony has now been fully described. The ultimate goal of life is to please Lord Vishnu by varnasrama-dharma.

“Spider Webs Are Precision Dew Collectors”

2010 February 7

Prabhupada, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto 2, “The Cosmic Manifestation”: [...] The exact example is the spider and spider’s web. The web is created by the spider, and it is maintained by the spider, and as soon as the spider likes, the whole thing is wound up within the spider. The spider is covered within the web. If an insignificant spider is so powerful as to act according to its will, why can’t the Supreme Being act by His supreme will in the creation, maintenance and destruction of the cosmic manifestations? By the grace of the Lord, a devotee like Brahma, or one in his chain of disciplic succession, can understand the almighty Personality of Godhead eternally engaged in His transcendental pastimes in the region of different energies. [...]

Creation-Evolution Headlines, Feb 04, 2010:  Photographs of dew drops on spider webs are favorite targets for nature photographers, because they resemble strings of pearls on fine jewelry (example 1, example 2).  But did you know the reason dewdrops bead up so well on webs is due to the fine microstructure of the spider silk?  A team of Chinese scientists studied this phenomenon and reported in Nature how it works.1 Their description is almost as dazzling as the photos:

“Old Primordial Soup Is Spoiled”

2010 February 7

Life Comes from Life: “[...] And so everyone is taught that life gradually arose from chemicals, a “primordial soup” consisting of amino acids, proteins and other essential ingredients. Yet in their journals and private discussions, the same scientists acknowledge that their theory has grave, sometimes insuperable difficulties. For example, certain features of the DNA coding mechanism cast serious doubt upon the substance of evolutionary thought. [...]”
Creation-Evolution Headlines, Feb 5, 2010 — Don’t open it; that can of primordial soup sitting on the shelf for decades is rotten.  PhysOrg announced, “New research rejects 80-year theory of ‘primordial soup’ as the origin of life.”  In its place come new theories about tiny chemical cooking pots in the pores of deep-sea vents.  Pioneered by Michael Russell (02/15/2008) and others, these scenarios picture energy gradients and concentrating mechanisms that might have gotten life cooking deep below the sea.

“The Soul is so subtle, you cannot see”

2010 February 7
by admin

Prabhupada, Vrindavana, November 7, 1976: Mind is subtle. Everyone, you have got mind, I have got mind, but I cannot see your mind; you cannot see my mind. Subtle. This is a material thing. Bhumir apo’nalo vayuh kham mano, mano. The sky, ether, we cannot see but we can perceive. When you press the sky like this, (claps) there is sound. You can understand, “Here is sky.” But mind you cannot see, still subtle.

“How the Butterflies Got Their Spots”

2010 February 7

Prabhupada, New York, December 16, 1966: [...] You see a butterfly, how it is nicely painted. You just see duplicate in both the wings. Just like an artist paint nicely, it is painted. So we think it is coming out of nothing. This is our foolishness. Here is, that it is coming out of the jnana-sakti. But His jnana is so wide that simply by His desire, simply by His will, it can be executed. These are the things to be studied. Because we cannot see something before our eyes, that does not mean there is no existence. There is existence, but we do not know how one is working, how one is working. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca. Svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya. [...]

ScienceDaily (Feb. 6, 2010) — How two butterfly species have evolved exactly the same striking wing colour and pattern has intrigued biologists since Darwin’s day. Now, scientists at Cambridge have found “hotspots” in the butterflies’ genes that they believe will explain one of the most extraordinary examples of mimicry in the natural world.

PADA: “ISKCON Money is for all Devotees, not the Elite”

2010 February 6

SRILA PRABHUPDADA: One may claim proprietorship to as much wealth as required to maintain body and soul together, but one who desires proprietorship over more than that must be considered a thief, and he deserves to be punished by the laws of nature. Of course, we need to be maintained in eating, sleeping, mating and defending: ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithuna, but since the Supreme Lord, the Personality of Godhead, has provided these necessities of life for the birds and bees, why not for mankind? There is no need for economic development; everything is provided. Therefore one should understand that everything belongs to Krishna, and with this idea, one may take prasada.

“Narayana Maharaja, but Heart and Soul is with Prabhupada”

2010 February 6
by admin

******** Dasi: I might get pelted for this. Srila Narayana Maharaj is my Guru who gave me Harinam initiation, about 3 years after I wandered about in Iskcon. But in my heart and soul, where great intense devotion and love exists, which is inexplicably far deeper than for my own Guru, lives Srila Prabhupad. And I never met him, nor heard him. But I do know through experience he is alive. Very much alive.

(this must be a new dilemma?)

PADA: This is a very nice realization: She is formally initiated by Narayana Maharaja, just like many people are fomally initiated by the GBC’s so-called gurus, but her — “heart and soul,” her real bhakti, is with Srila Prabhupada. Excellent. We have even sometimes told a few people to go ahead and get initiated by these bogus gurus so they can stay at some temple or ashram and avoid getting kicked out, but to worship Srila Prabhupada internally in their “heart and soul.” Just like when King Kansa was in charge, even very nice people had to worship him externally, but in their heart, they worshipped Krishna. Very nice. Good on ya ***** dasi! You are a de facto Prabhupadanuga. Yay! ys pd

Stick with Srila Prabhupada!
“Paul Howard” : Since my “initiation” by a certified ISKCON guru in 2004, my predominant feeling has been regret. I should’ve just stuck with Prabhupada.

“Philosophy Discussions with Rene Descartes”

prabhupadanugasHayagriva: [...] But at the same time the soul pervades the entire body.

Prabhupada: Yes. That is also explained in the Bhagavad-gita. Avinasi tu tad viddhi yena sarvam idam tatam. That portion which is spread all over the body, that is immortal. So this is the illumination or the shining of the soul. That the sun is situated localized in a particular place, that we can see everyday, but his illumination is distributed all over the universe.
