Austrians spend more on cars than on children

Austrian-times, 16. 08. 10. – 17:00: The top quarter of Austrian income earners spend more on cars than on children, according to a new study by Salzburg future researcher Reinhold Popp.

He said today (Mon): “The higher the income, the more is spent on cars,” which are an increasingly-important symbol of disparities of wealth and social status. Austrians spend 17 billion Euros annually on cars, accessories and fuel, according to the study.

Popp added that Austrians were spending 21 per cent of their income for housing, including energy, up from 12 per cent in 1954, since housing quality had steadily improved and apartments had become larger.

The lowest quarter of income earners, on the other hand, were spending 40 per cent of their incomes on housing, he noted.
