Mumbai Team makes Vain Bid to Enter ISKCON Bangalore Temple

Jun 03, 2011 — BANGALORE, INDIA (DAIJIWORLD)

An attempt by a team from Mumbai ISKCON to enter the Bangalore unit temple was prevented by those managing it. Several activists owing allegiance to the ISKCON temple in the city blocked the entry of the Mumbai team headed by Varada Krishna das, which came here in the aftermath of the state High Court order which ruled that the city property was part of the Mumbai ISKCON.

Madhupandit das, President of the Bangalore ISKCON, maintained he had approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order and till the apex court delivered its orders, Mumbai ISKCON cannot interfere in its working.

Passing orders on the property dispute between Mumbai ISKCON and the Bangalore branch, the court had last week given six weeks time for appealing against the verdict.

A tense situation prevailed at the entrance of ISKCON temple complex at Mahalakshmi Layout, where hundreds of activists of the Bangalore unit resisted Mumbai team attempts to enter it.

The arguments between the two groups led to traffic blockade on the road, which has become a narrow in the wake of the on-going works for Metro Rail. Police intervened and brought the situation under control. The Mumbai team returned following protests.

Madhupandit das objected to the Mumbai ISKCON attempts to gain control of the city unit as the matter was still pending before the Supreme Court.

They are attacking me as I started a rebellion within the movement against the American Guru system. They tried to enter the temple even without holding the HC order. Our petition is listed for hearing on Monday,” Madhu Pandit dasa added.

Peace Eludes, Conflict Pervades ISKCON

EXPRESS NEWS SVC – BANGALORE, INDIA

Commotion prevailed in front of ISKCON temple here on Friday evening when the temple president and his followers denied entry to ISKCON Mumbai’s supervisory committee (Dayaram das, Varadakrishna Das, Muralishyam Das, Rajendra Kamatgoudar, S P Rajeshwari).

The governing council of ISKCON had set up a four member committee to inspect the Bangalore office (Dayaram Das, Varadakrishna Das, Muralishyam Das, Rajendra Kamatgoudar, S P Rajeshwari).

A court order dated May 24 had ruled that the functioning of ISKCON Bangalore, including its president, was not be interfered with. However, the governing council of ISKCON had set up a four member committee to inspect the Bangalore office. When the team reached the temple premises at around 5.30 pm on Friday, ISKCON Bangalore President Madhu Pandit dasa and his followers blocked the entrance.

Eyewitnesses said the situation had become hostile. The supervisory committee led by Dayaram das and Varadakrishna das faced heat not only from behind the temple gate but also from the commuters, who kept honking as the traffic went haywire. The committee thus retreated.

Madhu Pandit Dasa said through media he got to know about the supervisory committee’s impending visit on Friday. He said the court had granted him time and the committee could not just come in and demand unrestricted access to documents and people. He said in Kolkata the documents had been tampered with and the leader there had thus been unfairly ousted from the organisation. He mentioned that the Bangalore office had receipts to the tune of 100 crore, spent over the past decade and he did not want the receipts here to be tampered with. Commenting on the standoff, Madhu Pandit Dasa said he and his followers did not do anything. He said when the committee members came to the temple, Bangalore devotees started singing bhajans at the gate. He said the police asked the supervisory committee members to go from there.

However, a member of ISKCON Sheshadripuram, who had accompanied the committee, alleged that the devotees manhandled the committee members. He said the supervisory committee had informed the police about their visit and sought protection but only a few policemen were present there, who too did not come to their rescue.

Subramanyanagar police inspector said it was not possible to post a full team there. He said the police team rushed to the spot the moment they got to know that the committee had gone to the temple. But by then, the committee had left.

Both Iskcon units file a case each

Following Friday’s ruckus at Bangalore’s Iskcon temple where the Bangalore and Mumbai members indulged in a verbal duel, office-bearers of both chapters of Iskcon on Saturday filed cases and counter-cases against each other.

Trouble began at the gate of the Iskcon temple on West of Chord Road near Rajajinagar, when the Mumbai Iskcon office-bearers arrived to inspect the working of the Bangalore Iskcon. Chanting bhajans and holding sticks, the Bangalore members stopped the Mumbai team at the gate, preventing them from entering the temple premises.

“A case and counter-case were filed both parties. We have registered two cases and will take up investigation soon,” said ACP (Malleswaram sub-division) GT Ajjappa.

Bharatashaba Das is the complainant in the case filed by Bangalore Iskcon against Dayaram Das, Varada Krishna Das, Radha Priya Devi Das, Anukula Keshava Murali Krishna and others of Mumbai Iskcon. Police registered the case under Sections 143, 147 (unlawful assembly and rioting), 323 (assault), 506 and 504 (threat to life) read with Section 149 (common intention for unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

A counter-case was filed by Mumbai Iskcon’s Varada Krishna Das against Madhu Pandita Das. Jaya Chaitanya Kodandarama Das, Raja Kanta Das, Bharatashaba Das, Sridhama Govinda Das and 50-60 others. The same sections under the IPC were slapped on the accused persons named in the FIR filed by Subramanyanagar police.

Uneasy calm prevails at Iskcon

Bangalore, June 4, DHNS:

Normalcy returned to the Iskcon temple premises on Saturday with a large number of devotees turning up for darshan.

None from the Mumbai Iskcon team turned up at the temple, though the Bangalore Iskcon temple authorities had anticipated it.

But tension was visible on the faces of Bangalore Iskcon temple authorities and many of them were seen keeping a strict vigil. Many of the devotees clad in white and saffron robes were seen hovering near the main entrance to prevent any forcible entry into the temple. As a precautionary measure, the police had deployed additional forces to ensure law and order in the area.

Tight security

The top police brass held a special meeting to review security situation in and around the temple. “The police will not yield to pressure of any sort and will act as per the High Court directives. We will sternly deal with those who try to create violence,” said a senior officer.

“The incident which took place Friday evening had no impact on devotees. Thousands of them visited the temple and participated in religious programmes. Nothing has hampered routine rituals inside the temple. Devotees will teach a befitting lesson to those who try to defame Bangalore Iskcon,” a Bangalore Iskcon representative told Deccan Herald.

On Friday, tension prevailed for hours outside the temple premises, when a team from Mumbai Iskcon tried to take control of the temple premises.

However, they failed in their attempt as Bangalore Iskcon team had converted the temple into a virtual fortress. The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional forces were deployed to thwart any untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, the Iskcon controversy took an interesting turn on Saturday with a few Bangalore Iskcon devotees and donors approaching a city civil court, seeking peaceful continuation of religious rituals at the temple premises.

They filed a public representative suit in the court making Bangalore Iskcon, Mumbai Iskcon and Principal Secretary to the State Home Department defendants.

They sought from the court a permanent injunction restraining the defendants (three parties) from interfering with the rights and privileges of devotees of Bangalore Iskcon, their activities and all incidental religious rights enjoyed by them in the scheduled property area till now. They have also sought other reliefs, advocate Anand S said.

The court allowed the application for dispensing notice to the principal secretary to the Home Department and also directed the plaintiff to take the paper publication.

The Subramanyanagar police registered cases under Sections 143, 174,232,341, 504, 506 and 149 of the IPC against Madhu Pandita Dasa and a few others for allegedly manhandling Mumbai Iskcon representative Varadakrishna Dasa, following a complaint.
