Small churches in Hungary fear losing legal status | The Associated Press

Dec 13 2011, BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hare Krishna members are protesting outside Hungary’s Parliament against a new law that will strip them of their status as a recognized church.

Monk Sivarama Svami, from the Krishna Valley farm in central Hungary says the new law on religion that takes effect in 2012 makes no sense. He says it forces churches that have been recognized in Hungary for decades to submit new registration requests.

Dozens of Hare Krishna members from his 300-person farm and two of their cows took part in Tuesday’s rally in Budapest, the capital.

Human rights groups say the law is flawed because instead of simply registering churches in court, the churches will need two-thirds support from lawmakers to keep their status.
