  1. Today there are so many kirtan leaders who are popular both with the public at large and with the Krishna devotees who are in our disciplic succession. However, Srila Prabhupada instructs us that, “As far as possible the chanting should be heard from the lips of a pure devotee of the Lord…”. The reason for this is a philosophical issue. The chanting of the pure devotee is saturated with ecstatic love for Krishna. And it is only by imbibing the taste of devotion emanating from the pure devotee and chanting following in his footsteps, following his devotional feeling that one’s chanting will actually beget Krishna’s mercy upon us. Therefore we sing daily, “The lotus feet of our spiritual master is the only way by which we can attain pure devotional service”. And, “From him Krishna prema emanates”. Yes, anyone can chant Hare Krishna. And yes, it is good for everyone to chant. But if we are serious about actually developing heartfelt love for Krishna, the process is that the pure devotee chants and his sound vibration enters into the ears of the disciple, and if the disciple chants with equal feeling, that becomes the worship of the holy name. And when the holy name is worshiped and that way, the name spreads His glories in the heart of such disciple, and the disciple develops ecstatic symptoms of Love of God. (See TLC chapter 18).
