Stone consciousness

A living organism is sometimes manifested even in stone. Experience shows that some hills and mountains grow. This is due to the presence of the soul within that stone. Above that, the next manifestation of the living condition is development of consciousness, and the next manifestation is the development of sense perception. In the Mokṣa-dharma section of the Mahābhārata it is stated that trees have developed sense perception; they can see and smell. We know by experience that trees can see. Sometimes in its growth a large tree changes its course of development to avoid some hindrances. This means that a tree can see, and according to Mahābhārata, a tree can also smell. This indicates the development of sense perception.

  1. Gauranga das says:

The most common example of living organism within rocks are corals – colonies of small animals embedded in calcium carbonate shells. They are in symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae which live within their tissues and provide organic nutrients that nourish them. Residing within the coral’s tissues, the microscopic algae are well protected and make use of the coral’s metabolic waste products for photosynthesis, the process by which plants make their own food. The corals benefit, in turn, as the algae produce oxygen, remove wastes, and supply the organic products of photosynthesis that corals need to grow, thrive, and build up the reef.

Coral reefs grow because of this relationship and sunlight that penetrates the water, allowing photosynthesis to occur. Reefs grow as corals and other organisms deposit calcium carbonate, the basis of coral, as a skeletal structure beneath and around themselves. Many other organisms living in the reef community contribute skeletal calcium carbonate in the same manner.

Similarly some hills and mountains also grow due to the presence of the living organism or soul within them.

Srila Prabhupada says that we must treat the lower living entities compassionately. Since there are living entities even within stones, we should treat those stones carefully, so we don’t harm the living entities who have taken shelter within them. The best approach is to give them prasadam. Or chant Hare Krsna. Krsna consciousness is so powerful, that even lower living entities within stones can advance spiritually, if somehow they get in contact with a pure devotee of Krsna. Srila Prabhupada is the great example of a saintly person who has shown compassion to the stone-like living entites, and made them Krsna conscious. Maybe in our previous life some were stones and were able to hear Srila Prabhupada chanting Hare Krsna, and now we are born as humans to make further advancement in Krsna counscousness. Just a thought.

Hare Krsna. All glories to Srila Prabhupada
