Prabhupāda: LEADERS MEANS THEY SHOULD BEHAVE IN SUCH A WAY SO THAT BY FOLLOWING THEM, OTHERS WILL BE BENEFITTED. THAT IS LEADER.

“In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.” (Brhan-naradiya Purana) Although we may TRY to revive the perfect varnasrama system, it is NOT possible in this age. People are fallen, disturbed and unfortunate:

prayenalpayusah sabhya
kalav asmin yuge janah
mandah sumanda-matayo
manda-bhagya hy upadrutah

“O learned one, in this iron age of Kali men have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed.” (Bhag. 1.1.10) In this age, there will be insufficient rainfall and food, and the government will plunder one’s income by heavy taxation. All of these characteristics of Kali-yuga are described in Srimad-Bhagavatam. People will become so disgusted that they will suddenly leave their wife and children and go to the forest. HOW CAN THE PEACEFUL VARNASRAMA-DHARMA BE REVIVED WHEN PEOPLE ARE SO HARASSED IN THIS AGE? IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE. THEREFORE THE SYSTEM OF BHAKTI-YOGA, THE CHANTING OF THE HARE KRSNA MAHA-MANTRA, SHOULD BE ADOPTED. The whole aim of bhakti-yoga is to satisfy Visnu. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayaih: Visnu, Krsna, came Himself as Caitanya Mahaprabhu to teach us the way of sankirtana.

FOR PROGRESS IN SPIRITUAL LIFE, THE SASTRAS RECOMMEND MEDITATION IN SATYA-YUGA, SACRIFICE FOR THE SATISFACTION OF LORD VISNU IN TRETA-YUGA AND GORGEOUS WORSHIP OF THE LORD IN THE TEMPLE IN DVAPARA-YUGA, BUT IN THE AGE OF KALI ONE CAN ACHIEVE SPIRITUAL PROGRESS ONLY BY CHANTING THE HOLY NAME OF THE LORD. This is confirmed in various scriptures. In Srimad-Bhagavatam there are many references to this fact. In the Twelfth Canto (12.3.51) it is said, kirtanad eva krsnasya mukta-sangah param vrajet: In the Age of Kali there are many faults, for people are subjected to many miserable conditions, yet in this age there is one great benediction–simply by chanting the Hare Krsna mantra one can be freed from all material contamination and thus be elevated to the spiritual world.

TYS 1 The Perfection of Yoga

THE YOGA SYSTEM, AS IT WAS RECOMMENDED IN THE SATYA-YUGA, THE GOLDEN AGE, WAS TO ALWAYS MEDITATE ON VISNU. IN THE TRETA-YUGA ONE COULD PRACTICE YOGA BY PERFORMING GREAT SACRIFICES, AND IN THE NEXT AGE, DVAPARA-YUGA, ONE COULD ACHIEVE PERFECTION BY TEMPLE WORSHIP. THE PRESENT AGE IS CALLED KALI-YUGA. KALI-YUGA MEANS THE AGE OF QUARREL AND DISAGREEMENT. NO ONE AGREES WITH ANYONE ELSE. EVERYONE HAS HIS OWN THEORY; EVERYONE HAS HIS OWN PHILOSOPHY. IF I DON’T AGREE WITH YOU, YOU FIGHT ME. THIS IS THE SYMPTOM OF KALI-YUGA. THE ONLY METHOD RECOMMENDED IN THIS AGE IS CHANTING THE HOLY NAME. Simply by chanting the holy name of God, one can attain that perfect self-realization which was attained by the yoga system in the Satya-yuga, by performance of great sacrifices in the Treta-yuga, and by large-scale temple worship in the Dvapara-yuga. That perfection can be attained by the simple method of Hari kirtana. Hari means the Supreme personality of Godhead; kirtana means to glorify.

73-11-08. Letter: Hamsaduta:

Yes, I want that you give me the facility to write my books, but I can attend some meetings of important people and elites. You have taken the right view of the importance of my books. Books will ALWAYS remain. That was the view of my Guru Maharaja, and I also have taken it. Therefore I started my movement with my books. And we shall be able to maintain everything with the sales of the books. The temples will be maintained by the book sales, AND IF THERE ARE NO MORE TEMPLES, THEN THE BOOKS SHALL REMAIN.

Note: the PRACTICAL REALITY— IS— there was not only A BAD DISCIPLE—- but——- LITERALLY—- MANY BAD DISCIPLES :

70-08-25. Letter: Bali-mardana

There are two verses in the Canakya Sloka how a family or an institution can be glorified or burned into ashes by one person. The Canakya Pandit says that if there is one tree in the forest producing nice aromatic flower, that one tree can glorify the whole forest by the flavor of its flower. Similarly if there is one tree in whose cavity there is a little fire, that one tree can burn into ashes the whole forest. SO THIS SIMILE IS APPLICABLE ANYWHERE. In a family if there is one good boy, he can glorify the whole family and similarly if there is bad boy he can turn the whole family into ashes. SIMILARLY IN THIS INSTITUTION IF THERE IS A BAD DISCIPLE HE CAN BURN THE WHOLE INSTITUTION INTO ASHES. The Governing Body Commission’s duty is therefore to see that every member is following the rules and regulations and chanting sixteen round regularly on the beads. I hope the GBC in cooperation with the Sannyasis in their touring program will be able to keep vigilance systematically in order to keep the Society as pure as possible.

The main business of human society is to think of the Supreme Personality of Godhead at all times, to become His devotees, to worship the Supreme Lord and to bow down before Him. The acarya, the authorized representative of the Supreme Lord, establishes these principles, but when he disappears, things once again become disordered. THE PERFECT DISCIPLES OF THE ACARYA TRY TO RELIEVE THE SITUATION BY SINCERELY FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE SPIRITUAL MASTER. At the present moment practically the entire world is afraid of rogues and nondevotees; therefore this Krsna consciousness movement is started to save the world from irreligious principles. Everyone should cooperate with this movement in order to bring about actual peace and happiness in the world.
