BHAKTI LATĀ BĪJA – THE SEED OF DEVOTIONAL SERVICE
Bhakti-latā-bīja means “the seed of devotional service.” When a person receives the seed of devotional service, he should take care of it by becoming a gardener and sowing the seed in his heart. If he waters the seed gradually by the process of śravaṇa and kīrtana (hearing and chanting), the seed will begin to sprout.
CC Madhya 19.152, Translation and Purport:
Who is qualified to receive the bhakti-latā-bīja?

“According to their karma, all living entities are wandering throughout the entire universe. Some of them are being elevated to the upper planetary systems, and some are going down into the lower planetary systems. Out of many millions of wandering living entities, one who is very fortunate gets an opportunity to associate with a bona fide spiritual master by the grace of Kṛṣṇa. By the mercy of both Kṛṣṇa and the spiritual master, such a person receives the seed of the creeper of devotional service.

Bhakti-latā-bīja means “the seed of devotional service.” Everything has an original cause, or seed. For any idea, program, plan or device, there is first of all the contemplation of the plan, and that is called the bīja, or seed. The methods, rules and regulations by which one is perfectly trained in devotional service constitute the bhakti-latā-bīja, or seed of devotional service. This bhakti-latā-bīja is received from the spiritual master by the grace of Kṛṣṇa. Other seeds, called anyābhilāṣa-bīja, include karma-bīja and jñāna-bīja. If one is not fortunate enough to receive the bhakti-latā-bīja from the spiritual master, he instead cultivates such seeds as karma-bīja, jñāna-bīja, or political, social or philanthropic bījas. However, the bhakti-latā-bīja is different from these other bījas.
One who is faithful to his spiritual master gets the bhakti-latā-bīja
The bhakti-latā-bīja can be received only through the mercy of the spiritual master. Therefore one has to satisfy the spiritual master to get the bhakti-latā-bīja (yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādaḥ *). The bhakti-latā-bīja is the origin of devotional service. Unless one satisfies the spiritual master, he gets the bīja, or root cause, of karma, jñāna and yoga without the benefit of devotional service. But one who is faithful to his spiritual master gets the bhakti-latā-bīja. This bhakti-latā-bīja is received when one is initiated by the bona fide spiritual master.
After receiving the spiritual master’s mercy, one must repeat his instructions, and this is called śravaṇa-kīrtana — hearing and chanting. One who has not properly heard from the spiritual master or who does not follow the regulative principles is not fit for chanting (kīrtana). This is explained in the Bhagavad-gītā (2.41): vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana. One who has not listened carefully to the instructions of the spiritual master is unfit for chanting or for preaching the cult of devotional service. One has to water the bhakti-latā-bīja by receiving instructions from the spiritual master.
If one is not fortunate enough to receive the bhakti-latā-bīja
from the spiritual master, he instead cultivates the seeds of
karma-bīja, jñāna-bīja, or political and social or philanthropic bīja.
However, bhakti-latā-bīja is different from these other bījas. Bhakti-latā-bīja can be received only through the mercy of the spiritual master. Therefore one has to satisfy the spiritual master to get bhakti-latā-bīja, yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādaḥ *
*The word guru-prasāda indicates that the spiritual master is very merciful in bestowing the boon of devotional service upon the disciple. That is the best possible gift the spiritual master has to offer. Those with a background of pious life are eligible to receive life’s supreme benefit, and to bestow this benefit, the Supreme Personality of Godhead sends His representative to impart His mercy. Endowed with the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the spiritual master distributes the mercy to those who are elevated and pious. Thus the spiritual master trains his disciples to render devotional service unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is called guru-kṛpā. It is kṛṣṇa-prasāda, Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, that He sends a bona fide spiritual master to the deserving disciple. By the mercy of Kṛṣṇa, one meets the bona fide spiritual master, and by the mercy of the spiritual master, the disciple is fully trained in the devotional service of the Lord.
To live with devotees or to live in a temple means to associate with the śravaṇa-kīrtana process. Sometimes neophyte devotees think that they can continue the śravaṇa-kīrtana process without worshiping the Deity, but the execution of such śravaṇa-kīrtana is meant for highly developed devotees like Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who engaged in the śravaṇa-kīrtana process without worshiping the Deity. However, one should not falsely imitate Haridāsa Ṭhākura and abandon Deity worship just to try to engage in śravaṇa-kīrtana. This is not possible for neophyte devotees.
A living entity can live either on the material plane or in the transcendental abode of the Lord, in accordance with his existential condition. The conditional changes of the living entity are explained in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta in the instructions given to Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī by Lord Śrī Caitanya: “The living entities all over the universes are enjoying the effects of the respective fruitive results of their own work, life after life. Out of all of them, some may be influenced by the association of pure devotees and thus get the chance to execute devotional service by attainment of taste. This taste is the seed of devotional service, and one who is fortunate enough to have received such a seed is advised to sow it in the core of his heart.
As one cultivates a seed by pouring water to fructify it, the seed of devotional service sown in the heart of the devotee may be cultured by pouring water in the form of hearing and chanting of the holy name and pastimes of the Lord. The creeper of devotional service, so nourished, gradually grows, and the devotee, acting as a gardener, goes on pouring the water of constant hearing and chanting. The creeper of devotional service gradually grows so high that it passes through the entire material universe and enters into the spiritual sky, growing still higher and higher until it reaches the planet Goloka Vṛndāvana.
The devotee-gardener is in touch with the abode of the Lord even from the material plane by dint of performing devotional service to the Lord simply by hearing and chanting. As a creeper takes shelter of another, stronger tree, similarly the creeper of devotional service, nourished by the devotee, takes shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord and thus becomes fixed. When the creeper is fixed, then the fruit of the creeper comes into existence, and the gardener who nourished it is able to enjoy this fruit of love, and his life becomes successful.” That Uddhava attained this stage is evident from his dealings. He could simultaneously reach the supreme planet and still appear in this world.
A creeper generally takes shelter of a big tree, but the bhakti-latā, being the creeper of spiritual energy, cannot take shelter of any material planet, for there is no tree on any material planet that the bhakti-latā creeper can utilize for shelter. In other words, devotional service cannot be utilized for any material purpose. Devotional service is meant only for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Sometimes men with a poor fund of knowledge maintain that bhakti can be applied to material things also. In other words, they say that devotional service can be rendered to one’s country or to the demigods, but this is not a fact. Devotional service is especially meant for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and it is beyond this material range.
There is a river, or causal ocean, between the spiritual and material natures, and this river is free from the influence of the three modes of material nature; therefore it is called Virajā. The word vi means vigata (completely eradicated), and rajaḥ means “the influence of the material world.” On this platform, a living entity is completely free from material entanglement. For the jñānīs who want to merge into the Brahman effulgence, there is brahma-loka. Bhakti-latā, however, has no shelter in the material world, nor has it shelter in brahma-loka, although brahma-loka is beyond the material world. The bhakti-latā increases until it reaches the spiritual sky, where Goloka Vṛndāvana is situated.
Every living entity is wandering within this universe in different species and on different planetary systems according to his fruitive activities. Out of many millions of living entities, one may be fortunate enough to receive the seed of bhakti-latā, the creeper of devotional service. By the grace of the spiritual master and Kṛṣṇa, one nourishes the bhakti-latā by regularly sprinkling it with the water of śravaṇa-kīrtana, hearing and chanting. In this way the seed of bhakti-latā sprouts and grows up and up through the whole universe until it penetrates the covering of the material universe and reaches the spiritual world.
The bhakti-latā continues to grow until it reaches the topmost planetary system, Goloka Vṛndāvana, where Kṛṣṇa lives. There the creeper takes shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord, and that is its final destination. At that time the creeper begins to grow the fruits of ecstatic love of God. It is the duty of the devotee who nourishes the creeper to be very careful. It is said that the watering of the creeper must continue: ihāṅ mālī sece nitya śravaṇādi jala. It is not that at a certain stage one can stop chanting and hearing and become a mature devotee. If one stops, one certainly falls down from devotional service. Although one may be very exalted in devotional service, he should not give up the watering process of śravaṇa-kīrtana. If one gives up that process, it is due to an offense. This is described in the following verse:
yadi vaiṣṇava-aparādha uṭhe hātī mātā
upāḍe vā chiṇḍe, tāra śukhi’ yāya pātā
“If the devotee commits an offense at the feet of a Vaiṣṇava while cultivating the creeper of devotional service in the material world, his offense is compared to a mad elephant that uproots the creeper and breaks it. In this way the leaves of the creeper are dried up.
Giving up the regulative principles and living according to one’s whims are compared to a mad elephant, which by force uproots the bhakti-latā and breaks it to pieces. In this way the bhakti-latā shrivels up. Such an offense is especially created when one disobeys the instructions of the spiritual master. This is called guru-avajñā. The devotee must therefore be very careful not to commit offenses against the spiritual master. As soon as one is deviated from the spiritual master, the uprooting of the bhakti-latā begins, and gradually all the leaves dry up.
tāte mālī yatna kari’ kare āvaraṇa
aparādha-hastīra yaiche nā haya udgama
“The gardener must defend the creeper by fencing it all around so that the powerful elephant of offenses may not enter.
While the bhakti-latā creeper is growing, the devotee must protect it by fencing it all around. The neophyte devotee must be protected by being surrounded by pure devotees. In this way he will not give the maddened elephant a chance to uproot his bhakti-latā creeper. When one associates with nondevotees, the maddened elephant is set loose.
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has said: asat-saṅga-tyāga,-ei vaiṣṇava-ācāra. The first business of a Vaiṣṇava is to give up the company of nondevotees. A so-called mature devotee, however, commits a great offense by giving up the company of pure devotees. The living entity is a social animal, and if one gives up the society of pure devotees, he must associate with nondevotees (asat-saṅga). By contacting nondevotees and engaging in nondevotional activities, a so-called mature devotee will fall victim to the mad elephant offense. Whatever growth has taken place is quickly uprooted by such an offense. One should therefore be very careful to defend the creeper by fencing it in-that is, by following the regulative principles and associating with pure devotees.
If one thinks that there are many pseudo devotees or nondevotees in the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Society, one can keep direct company with the spiritual master, and if there is any doubt, one should consult the spiritual master.

All these obstructions have been described in this verse as unwanted creepers. They simply present obstacles for the real creeper, bhakti-latā-bīja. One should be very careful to avoid all these unwanted things. Sometimes these unwanted creepers look exactly like the bhakti-latā creeper. They appear to be of the same size and the same species when they are packed together with the bhakti-latā creeper, but in spite of this, the creepers are called upaśākhā. A pure devotee can distinguish between the bhakti-latā creeper and a mundane creeper, and he is very alert to distinguish them and keep them separate.

Even if one thinks that there are many pseudo devotees or nondevotees in the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Society, still one should stick to the Society; if one thinks the Society’s members are not pure devotees, one can keep direct company with the spiritual master, and if there is any doubt, one should consult the spiritual master.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“still one should stick to the Society” This is Jayadvaita’s Changed Version. But Srila Prabhupada does NOT state that at all. On the contrary here is what Srila Prabhupada states:
SB 3.29.8 P Explanation of Devotional Service by Lord Kapila
One who approaches the Supreme Lord to render devotional service, but who is proud of his personality, envious of others or vengeful, is in the mode of anger. He thinks that he is the best devotee. Devotional service executed in this way is not pure; it is mixed and is of the lowest grade, tamasah. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura advises that a Vaisnava who is not of good character should be avoided. A Vaisnava is one who has taken the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the ultimate goal of life, but if one is not pure and still has motives, then he is not a Vaisnava of the first order of good character. One may offer his respects to such a Vaisnava because he has accepted the Supreme Lord as the ultimate goal of life, BUT ONE SHOULD NOT KEEP COMPANY WITH A VAISNAVA WHO IS IN THE MODE OF IGNORANCE.
SB 3.29.16 P Explanation of Devotional Service by Lord Kapila
We should befriend and offer special respect to persons who are developed in Krsna consciousness. Other living entities are undoubtedly part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, but because their consciousness is still covered and not developed in Krsna consciousness, we should renounce their association. It is said by Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura that EVEN IF ONE IS A VAISNAVA, IF HE IS NOT OF GOOD CHARACTER HIS COMPANY SHOULD BE AVOIDED, ALTHOUGH HE MAY BE OFFERED THE RESPECT OF A VAISNAVA. Anyone who accepts Visnu as the Supreme Personality of Godhead is accepted as a Vaisnava, but a Vaisnava is expected to develop all the good qualities of the demigods.
SB 3.29.17 P Explanation of Devotional Service by Lord Kapila
In Bhagavad-gita there is reference to bodhayantah parasparam, “discussing among themselves.” Generally pure devotees utilize their valuable time in chanting and discussing various activities of Lord Krsna or Lord Caitanya amongst themselves. There are innumerable books, such as the Puranas, Mahabharata, Bhagavatam, Bhagavad-gita and Upanisads, which contain countless subjects for discussion among two devotees or more. Friendship should be cemented between persons with mutual interests and understanding. Such persons are said to be sva jati, “of the same caste.” THE DEVOTEE SHOULD AVOID A PERSON WHOSE CHARACTER IS NOT FIXED IN THE STANDARD UNDERSTANDING; EVEN THOUGH HE MAY BE A VAISNAVA, OR A DEVOTEE OF KRSNA, IF HIS CHARACTER IS NOT CORRECTLY REPRESENTATIVE, THEN HE SHOULD BE AVOIDED. One should steadily control the senses and the mind and strictly follow the rules and regulations, and he should make friendship with persons of the same standard.
NoD 7 Evidence Regarding Devotional Principles
Lord Caitanya was once asked by one of His householder devotees what the general behavior of a Vaisnava should be. In this connection, Lord Caitanya replied that a Vaisnava should always give up the company of nondevotees. Then He explained that there are two kinds of nondevotees: one class is against the supremacy of Krsna, and another class is too materialistic. In other words, THOSE WHO ARE AFTER MATERIAL ENJOYMENT AND THOSE WHO ARE AGAINST THE SUPREMACY OF THE LORD ARE CALLED AVAISNAVA, AND THEIR COMPANY SHOULD BE STRICTLY AVOIDED.
SB 3.29.8 P Explanation of Devotional Service by Lord Kapila

Adi 1.59 The Spiritual Masters
It is indicated that to learn the transcendental science, it is imperative that one avoid the company of undesirable persons and always seek the company of saints and sages who are able to impart lessons of transcendental knowledge. The potent words of such realized souls penetrate the heart, thereby eradicating all misgivings accumulated through years of undesirable association. FOR A NEOPHYTE DEVOTEE THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF PERSONS WHOSE ASSOCIATION IS UNDESIRABLE: (1) GROSS MATERIALISTS WHO CONSTANTLY ENGAGE IN SENSE GRATIFICATION AND (2) UNBELIEVERS WHO DO NOT SERVE THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD BUT SERVE THEIR SENSES AND THEIR MENTAL WHIMS IN TERMS OF THEIR SPECULATIVE HABITS. INTELLIGENT PERSONS SEEKING TRANSCENDENTAL REALIZATION SHOULD VERY SCRUPULOUSLY AVOID THEIR COMPANY.

SB 1.7.42 The Son of Drona Punished
The specific words used in this sloka are vama-svabhava, “mild and gentle by nature.” A good man or woman accepts anything very easily, but a man of average intelligence does not do so. BUT, ANYWAY, WE SHOULD NOT GIVE UP OUR REASON AND DISCRIMINATORY POWER JUST TO BE GENTLE. ONE MUST HAVE GOOD DISCRIMINATORY POWER TO JUDGE A THING ON ITS MERIT. WE SHOULD NOT FOLLOW THE MILD NATURE OF A WOMAN AND THEREBY ACCEPT THAT WHICH IS NOT GENUINE. Asvatthama may be respected by a good-natured woman, but that does not mean that he is as good as a genuine brahmana.
“A devotee should have intelligence to know who is deviating. SURRENDER BY YOUR INTELLIGENCE BUT DON’T SURRENDER YOUR INTELLIGENCE.” (SP to Bali Mardana, 1974)
Hare Krishna.
I love this analogy of ” becoming a gardener” . I think this is very well thought out because the experience of becoming an actual gardener illustrates all the problems with growing seeds, and then growing them on to fructifying. And all the pitfalls associated with growing plants are extremely useful when we apply this analogy to the Bhakti Lata Bija. The analogy helps us understand exactly what is going on, the idea of watering, how to weed, how to nourish, and how to identify the seeds you have sown so you are not just watering and growing all the wrong seeds. Then the whole concept of protecting the seeds that are growing. There is so much to learn just about growing seeds and plants. Even just the sowing of seeds can be the end of the seeds just by sowing to deep and over or under watering. The analogy seems so apt, how sensitive we have to be just to sow mundane seeds what to speak of the Bhakti Lata Bija.
Commenting on JAS additions to Srila Prabhupada’s original by adding the words ” ….still one should stick to the Society….” shows us how crass JAS is through his Americanism. Srila Prabhupada is always so poetic in His words no matter what the subject and explains it all comprehensively, i just cant see the point in JAS additions, they seem to just lower the quality. It just seems a waste of time and effort and an Americanisation.
Dusyanta prabhu, you state..’i just cant see the point in JAS additions, they seem to just lower the quality. It just seems a waste of time and effort and an Americanisation.’
Can’t you see that this has nothing to do with ‘quality’ or presentation. It is JAS & Co’s evil agenda to ‘de-platform’ Srila Prabhupada as the Founder AND the Acarya of his own ISKCON, and to further propound their MASS (Mass Acarya Successor System).
Similarly the atheistic impersonal communistic Socialism that is sweeping the planet these days, orders one to surrender to the STATE (of course with its un-elected elite criminals at the top). Sound familiar?
Balaram das:Can’t you see that this has nothing to do with ‘quality’ or presentation. It is JAS & Co’s evil agenda to ‘de-platform’ Srila Prabhupada as the Founder AND the Acarya of his own ISKCON, and to further propound their MASS (Mass Acarya Successor System).
Mahesh: Duysanta Prabhu was in FINANCIAL post at Bhaktivedanta Manor so far I understand MONEY often influences ones talk-speak because he only sees it as “quality” presentation:

JAS is just a small, insignificant, bothersome insect who is enabling the bigger demons with their World Plan. ISKCON is in the hands of these Satanic Globalists and are putty in their hands.
JAS is envious of Srila Prabhupada as you say, but so are all the ”leaders” of ISKCON.
Now the Globalist Demons are timing their ‘false flag’ terrorist attacks to kill the people on the street to enforce their ‘lock-down’ because of a virus that does not exist! Dusyanta Prabhu is extolling the merits of the rural lifestyle, which is what Srila Prabhupada wanted, but the fact is that the Globalist Demons have all the laws in place to prevent this style of living with the implementation of agenda 21 (and agenda 2030)……This is explained on the aangirfan blogger website (Nov 2nd 2020) ‘vid’ entitled “IF YOU CAN HANDLE THE TRUTH, HERE IT IS”.
The wildfires that have swept the west coast of the USA (part of a pattern worldwide) due to geoengineering, chemtrails, direct energy weapons (DEW), Microwaves and HAARP are designed to clear people off the land and push them into compact city centres, a concrete, high density series of housing units surrounded by an atmospheric soup of 5G, microwave and 24 hr surveillance.
They are already ‘changing’ the building regulations of these people who’s houses have burnt down (Colorado) so they cannot re-build due to “rezoning”
JAS has already condemned himself to hell so why the focus on this sad, unimportant, envious, twisted, halfwit? He is just another ‘enabler’ who is working for the Globalist Demons to destroy Dharma. 178 countries have signed up to the Agenda 21 program including the Pope (a Jesuit Satanist!) and their language is……..”Action on Climate Change” (which in actuality is covert geoengineering), Smart Cities, Smart Phones, 5G, “Sustainable Development”, The Technology Future!, “Smart Initiatives”, Political Correctness!, Carbon Neutral!, Embrace the Future!, Keeping us Safe!, Smart Technology, Carbon Footprint, Local Initiatives, Electronic Currency, 24 Hour Surveillance, Military Law (Maritime Law), Riot Control, Abortion Rights, GMO Food control, The Delphi Technique, Mandatory Toxic Vaccines (containing aborted foetus’s), Social Distancing (Isolation Protocol, created in 1957 by the CIA), Mass Censorship, Mass Media Indoctrination, Slaughterhouse “Education” System, False-Flag Terrorism (carried out by the Security Services) etc etc etc ……………
Slia Prabhupada’s mission was successful as he completed all the major Shastras, so for those who are sincere, they are easily obtainable or even free and will be for the next 10,000 years.
Sudarsana Das: JAS is envious of Srila Prabhupada as you say, but so are all the ”leaders” of ISKCON.
Mahesh: correct, Lord Krsna is sorting them out eg. TKG(Tamal Krsna) one of the poison givers – went head first thru windscreen – crowned in glass VERY painful exit, another poison giver Bhakti Caru (Kishore Bhattacarya) he was taken to US hospital with a view to save himself – returned back to India as—- carcass. Suhotra swami – carcass found in toilet. Temple President of Bhaktivedanta Manor Sruti Dharma puppet and bogus guru follower – had brain cancer dead – gone. Anti Ritvik demons they are sent to Yamaraja for punishment:

“JAS is envious of Srila Prabhupada as you say, but so are all the ”leaders” of ISKCON.”
Why I said JAS & CO.
Pamho agtacbsp damodara masa ki jay, all the relationship are almost broken in Kali Yuga age, even in the fake reflections of f-iskcon the bhakti Lata bija is not growing very well because there are not good gardeners and a lot of hati Mata mad elephants many people lost their faith in sadhu sanga and do spiritual life at home to avoid more mad elephants through the bad example of f-iskcon we can still doing sadhu sanga by associating with srila prabhupada books holy dham etc… Is more safe the bhakti Lata bija because to take and give association is a science the relationship get broke because there’s not knowledge of this science anyway we are still in the beginning and is ridiculous to think we already got there like all the kangooru are doing we are preparing for the next life by keeping to take care of the bhakti Lata bija agtacbsp ys haribol

S.B. 3.31.48 — THE MOVEMENTS OF THE LIVING ENTITIES
TRANSLATION
“Endowed with right vision and strengthened by devotional service and a pessimistic attitude towards material identity, one should relegate his body to this illusory world through his reason. Thus one can be unconcerned with this material world. ”
PURPORT
“It is sometimes misunderstood that if one has to associate with persons engaged in devotional service, he will not be able to solve the economic problem. To answer this argument, it is described here that one has to associate with liberated persons not directly, physically, but by understanding, through philosophy and logic, the problems of life. It is stated here, samyag-darśanayā buddhyā: one has to see perfectly, and by intelligence and yogic practice one has to renounce this world…..”
Just wondering who is Gaudiya Vedanta Publications (bottom left-hand corner of the above picture)? Thanks and Haribol.
Dear LW prabhu,
A quick goggle search identifies it as the book publishing division for GM’s deceased Narayan goswami.
IMHO.. enuff said!
Trust we also don’t start seeing his lectures posted on Prabhupadanugas’ forum.
Yfs, Bal.
PS: I’m asking because my less than stellar search engine shows a fb link and I don’t use fb. So I’m curious to know who drew this diagram, or where it came from. Thank you.

If one thinks that there are many pseudo devotees or nondevotees in the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Society, one can keep direct company with the spiritual master, and if there is any doubt, one should consult the spiritual master.
What about those who don’t know who Srila Prabhupada is? Is there a way for them to not only find out by reading but find out in the practical way through REGULAR one on one senior devotee association? The people need the direct company of Srila Prabhupada via a siksa as well as the books. Gita first and foremost.. That siksa association is supposed to be a daily rhythm not a fly by night associative response and should be under the direction of the Brahminical class. Where are they by the way? The Internet may become crippled or gone but the mission remains the same. If we cannot teach and share the rightful spiritual inheritance that everyone deserves then we have failed and missed Prabhupada’s secret of success. Forget?
Charles Dowson(Hasti Gopal Prabhu): What about those who don’t know who Srila Prabhupada is?
Mahesh: Srila Prabhupada is in his books. Just distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books: he is available in his books:

Prabhupada: So in my absence you read the books. What I talk, I have written in the books. That’s all.
Indian Man (2): Personally, we think more greater.
Prabhupada: That’s all right. BUT STILL, YOU CAN ASSOCIATE WITH ME BY READING MY BOOKS.

Book distribution is solid. EVEN IF THEY DO NOT READ, SIMPLY BY TOUCHING THEY ARE BENEFITED. IT IS SO MUCH POWERFUL.

Regarding the question you have raised about traveling sankirtana parties and selling of books, yes, we want money. So that is the real preaching, selling books. Who can speak better than the books? At least whoever buys, he will look over. If you have to sell books, do it by hook or by crook. THE REAL PREACHING IS SELLING BOOKS. YOU SHOULD KNOW THE TACTIC HOW TO SELL WITHOUT IRRITATING. WHAT YOUR LECTURE WILL DO FOR THREE MINUTES, BUT IF HE READS ONE PAGE HIS LIFE MAY BE TURNED. We don’t want to irritate anyone, however. If he goes away by your agressive tactics, then you are nonsense and it is your failure. Neither you could sell a book, neither he would remain. BUT IF HE BUYS A BOOK THAT IS THE REAL SUCCESSFUL PREACHING. That is the certificate of my Guru Maharaja, if someone, brahmacari, would sell a one paise magazine, if one of our brahmacaris would go and sell a few copies, he would be very very glad and say “Oh, you are so nice!” So distribution of literature is our real preaching. Now if you cannot handle the matter nicely, that is your fault. But the success of your preaching will be substantiated by how many books are sold. Anything you want to sell, you have to a little canvass, so he gives some money for the service of Krsna. That is his good luck and he gets the chance to read some transcendental knowledge. But if you only irritate and he goes away, that is your less intelligence.

Yes, that is a good proposal, print many many books in African language and distribute widely, that is real preaching work. If you sell a book to someone, that is better than your speaking to them–WHAT WILL YOUR THREE MINUTES’ PREACHING DO? BUT IF THEY READ A BOOK IT MAY TURN THEIR LIFE. Go on preaching, that is the highest perfection of activity, and do not worry for anything, Krishna is so much appreciative of this preaching work that He will give you every facility, as much as you have ambition
One thing is, if that printer is so cheap, why not print all our European books there? ANYWAY, PRINT BOOKS, DISTRIBUTE PROFUSELY, AND THAT WILL BE THE BEST PREACHING WORK. WHAT WILL YOUR THREE MINUTES’ PREACHING DO?–BUT IF THEY BUY ONE BOOK, IT MAY TURN THEIR LIFE. SO MAKE THIS YOUR IMPORTANT TASK, TO PRINT OUR BOOKS IN FRENCH LANGUAGE AND OTHER LANGUAGES, AND DISTRIBUTE WIDELY, AND THAT WILL PLEASE MY GURU MAHARAJA. NEVER MIND IT TAKES LITTLE TIME TO MAKE PROGRESS, OUR PROCESS IS SLOW BUT SURE, AND WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT IF WE CONTINUE IN THIS WAY WE SHALL GO ONE DAY BACK TO HOME, BACK TO GOD HEAD.

KB 90 Summary Description of Lord Krsna’s Pastimes
Following in the holy footsteps of Srila Sukadeva Gosvami, we have tried to present this book Krsna for being read and heard by the conditioned souls of this age. BY HEARING THE PASTIMES OF LORD KRSNA, ONE IS SURE AND CERTAIN TO GET SALVATION AND BE TRANSFERRED BACK HOME, BACK TO GODHEAD. It is recommended by Sukadeva Gosvami that as we hear the transcendental pastimes and activities of the Lord, we gradually cut the knots of material contamination. Therefore, regardless of what one is, if one wants the association of Lord Krsna in the transcendental kingdom of God for eternity in blissful existence, one must hear about the pastimes of Lord Krsna and chant the maha-mantra, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
THE TRANSCENDENTAL PASTIMES OF THE SUPREME PERSONALITY OF GODHEAD KRSNA ARE SO POWERFUL THAT SIMPLY BY HEARING, READING AND MEMORIZING THIS BOOK KRSNA, ONE IS SURE TO BE TRANSFERRED TO THE SPIRITUAL WORLD, WHICH IS ORDINARILY VERY DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE. The description of the pastimes of Lord Krsna is so attractive that automatically it gives us an impetus to study repeatedly, and THE MORE WE STUDY THE PASTIMES OF THE LORD, THE MORE WE BECOME ATTACHED TO HIM. THIS VERY ATTACHMENT TO KRSNA MAKES ONE ELIGIBLE TO BE TRANSFERRED TO HIS ABODE, GOLOKA VRNDAVANA.

Amogha: Srila Prabhupada . When people in the street hear Krsna’s name, the chanting, or they get some literature, does that mean they will not take birth as an animal?
Prabhupada: No. They’ll get birth in a good family.sucinam srimatam gehe [Bg. 6.41]. IF THEY SIMPLY APPRECIATE “IT IS VERY NICE,” THEN IN THE NEXT LIFE, HUMAN LIFE IS GUARANTEED. In a very nice family. Simply if he appreciates, “Yes, it is very nice”—that’s all. Then he’ll get another chance.
Amogha: Many people think the pictures are very nice.
Prabhupada: Anything they say nice, that means it is guaranteed, next life. Or even in this life it will definitely help. As soon as he reads some pages, then it is guaranteed. Those who are enquiring, that means they are liking. Their life is guaranteed.
Amogha: One man who joined us about Rathayatra time last year was a solicitor. He used to buy our books but he never read them. But he would keep them on his bookshelf. And he used to always think, “Those are such beautiful books.” He used to think like that.
Prabhupada: This is appreciation.
Amogha: He never got time to read it.
Prabhupada: IT DOESN’T MATTER. IF HE KEEPS THE BOOKS WITH APPRECIATION, THAT MAKES HIS LIFE SURE, INSURED. HE IMMEDIATELY BECOMES IN TOUCH WITH GOD. WHO KEEPS THE BOOK WITH REVERENCE AND LOVE, IMMEDIATELY HE BECOMES IN TOUCH WITH GOD. BECAUSE THESE BOOKS ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF GOD.

Yes, I want that you give me the facility to write my books, but I can attend some meetings of important people and elites. You have taken the right view of the importance of my books. Books will always remain. That was the view of my Guru Maharaja, and I also have taken it. Therefore I started my movement with my books. And we shall be able to maintain everything with the sales of the books. The temples will be maintained by the book sales, AND IF THERE ARE NO MORE TEMPLES, THEN THE BOOKS SHALL REMAIN.

Adi 1.35 The Spiritual Masters
The SERVICE of the spiritual master IS ESSENTIAL. IF THERE IS NO CHANCE TO SERVE THE SPIRITUAL MASTER DIRECTLY, A DEVOTEE SHOULD SERVE HIM BY REMEMBERING HIS INSTRUCTIONS. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SPIRITUAL MASTER’S INSTRUCTIONS AND THE SPIRITUAL MASTER HIMSELF. IN HIS ABSENCE, THEREFORE, HIS WORDS OF DIRECTION SHOULD BE THE PRIDE OF THE DISCIPLE.
