SEARCHING FOR SPIRITUAL LIFE
Śrīla Prabhupāda: “These boys, these girls, they are Europeans, Americans. They were accustomed to so many bad habits and according to our standard, and now they have given up. They have no illicit sex, no gambling, no meat-eating, no intoxication, even up to smoking or drinking tea. Yes.“ (Conversation December 9, 1973, LA)
Śrīla Prabhupāda: “Anyone who takes to this chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, he’ll be cleansed of all sinful activities and then everything will come out nice. And it is practical. It is not story. Just see, all our disciples in Europe, America, they were habituated to so many bad habits, and because they are chanting, they are now cleansed. So it is small-scale. If you propagate it large-scale, everyone will be cleansed. (break) …disciples who were trained up from very beginning of their life: meat-eating. They are giving meat-eating.”
All the dirty things from your heart will be cleansed simply by chanting. You chant. There is no expenditure; there is no loss. But as we are chanting, if you kindly chant… You just do it for one week, and you see how much you progress in spiritual knowledge. We are getting many students. Simply by chanting, they are understanding the whole philosophy. They are giving up their bad habits, they are becoming purified, so many things. They are practical. This Society, movement, is started practically not more than two years, 1966, and we have got so many branches. The American boys and girls, they are taking it very seriously and do it very nicely. They are following all rules and regulation, and they are happy. (Address to Indian Association, 1969)
“In the beginning of life nobody smokes or nobody becomes intoxicated. It is learned by bad association. Similarly, it can be given up by good association. They are called anarthas. Anartha means unwanted bad habits. So when we are children, innocent, we have no bad habits, but as we grow and associate with bad company, we also acquire all these bad habits. So to give up all these bad habits means we have to associate with sādhus or devotees, saintly persons. Then we can give it up. This is called anartha-nivṛtti, means giving up all unwanted bad habits. These things are not wanted. Nobody dies if he does not smoke or drink. Nobody dies. So artificially we learn it, so by good association we can give it up. So when we are purified out of all the bad habits, then we become fixed up in spiritual knowledge. So in this way we make advance in spiritual life, and at the last stage we become lover of God. This is the process, and one who teaches this process, he is guru. This is the definition of guru.” Gita Lecture(February 11, 1975)
Śrīla Prabhupāda: “We have come to this civilized form of human being. Especially we have taken birth in India. It is a good fortune. It is an opportunity given by prakṛti. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ. So we should take advantage of this opportunity. Here in India we have got this sublime knowledge of Veda, and here there are still thousands and thousands of saintly persons. So we should take advantage of this facility. Caitanya Mahāprabhu therefore said that “Anyone who has taken birth in the land of Bhāratavarṣa…” Bhārata-bhūmite manuṣya janma haila yāra: [Cc. Ādi 9.41] “Anyone who has taken birth in this land of Bhāratavarṣa…” Janma sārthaka kari’ kara para-upakāra: “First of all make your life perfect by taking advantage of this Vedic facility, and then distribute this knowledge all over the world.” This is injunction. This is the mission of Lord Caitanya.”
“So this is the duty. This is the duty of all responsible Indians, how to make his life perfect, utilizing Vedic knowledge, and then distribute it throughout the whole world.
Because in other parts of the world they have no such advantage. Why these American boys are coming to us? Because they did not get the advantage of spiritual life, but they are seeking after spiritual life. Athāto brahma jijñāsā. They are fed up with this materialistic way of life. They want something spiritual. But because there is no such information, there is no such leader, they are becoming hippies, frustrated, confused. And because here is something substantial, they are taking it. This is the secret of success of this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.”
Prabhupāda: Without being sinless, nobody can understand what is Bhagavān, what is Bhagavad-bhajana. Therefore this is the beginning of sinless life: no intoxication, no illicit sex… If you can, if somebody avoids these things, he does not die. It is simply a little practice. He’s practiced to all these bad habits, and if he likes, he can give it up. It is not difficult. And this is tapasya, little tapasya. Tapasā brahmacaryeṇa (SB 6.1.13). To become advanced in spiritual life, one has to accept some tapasya, austerity. So this is a simple austerity. Therefore when we officially initiate, we get this promise from the student, that “You have to follow this.” And that’s all.
To advance in spiritual life these things are essential, tapasya. Tapasya means voluntarily accepting something which may be painful. Just like we are recommending no illicit sex, no gambling, no meat-eating. So those who are accustomed to these bad habits, for them, in he beginning it may be a little difficult. But in spite of becoming difficult, one has to do it. That is called tapasya. To rise early in the morning, those who are not practiced, it is a little painful, but one has to do it. So this is called tapasya. So according to the Vedic injunction, there are some tapasyas that must be done.
So every human being should be educated to accept this sanātana-dharma, how one can go back to home, back to Godhead. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. So sanātana-dharma is not meant for a particular class of men. It is meant for all living entities. Unfortunately, the Hindu dharma, or sanātana-dharma, they have identified. And…, as if others have no right to enter into the sanātana-dharma. No. That’s not a fact. The fact is every living entity is sanātana. And the process by which a living entity is transferred to the sanātana dhāma, sanātana place, that is called sanātana-dharma. It is… Sanātana-dharma is misunderstood. Just like in India there are classes of men who call: “We are sanātanists.” Everyone should be sanātanist. Sanātana-dharma is not meant for a particular class of men or country or society. Sanātana-dharma means it is meant for the living entities. (Vrndavana Lecture, November 14, 1972)

Svarūpa Dāmodara: How do we bring them to their senses?
Prabhupāda: This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Be Kṛṣṇa conscious and everything will be solved. How we are speaking? Because we have taken shelter of Kṛṣṇa. That’s all. Mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti, as soon as you surrender to Kṛṣṇa, all this māyā, misconception, will go. You’ll become right person, in knowledge. That is Kṛṣṇaconsciousness, to become perfect man. Because there is guidance, the perfect guidance, so he becomes perfect. Harernāma harer nāma harer nāma… [Cc. Ādi 17.21]. [break] This is the statement in Bhāgavata. Adānta-gobhir viśatāṁtamisram: [SB 7.5.30] “Because they cannot control their senses, therefore they are making progress towards the darkest region of hell.” Adānta-gobhir viśatāṁ tamisraṁ punaḥ punaś carvita: “And repeatedly chewing the chewed.” They make one plan. It is frustrated. Again make another plan. That is frustrated. Again make another plan. But they will never agree to accept that these plans are all useless. That is rascaldom. That is rascaldom. Repeatedly chewing the chewed, chewing the chewed. The same woman, same vagina, and that is their pleasure. Bas. At home, and in street or nightclub and theater—the same vagina. That’s all.
Dr. Wolfe: Śrīla Prabhupāda, they would say that that is braveness. they are brave in trying again and again.
Prabhupāda: Yes, they must say. That is their rascaldom. One who goes, braveness, go to the Pacific Ocean and die, and go to hell. That is their braveness. That is their braveness. They are bravely going to hell. That’s all. There is a story, palavarne boi nate(?). One man is chasing another man. So the man who is chased, he’s asked, “Why you are fleeing away, fleeing away?” So, “Am I afraid of you? Why shall I not flee? Why shall not go? Am I afraid of you.” He’s fleeing out of fear, but still, he says, “Am I afraid of you? Am I afraid of you? Why shall I not? Why shall I stop?” This is the position. “Bravely I am going to hell. Why shall I stop? I am brave.” This is going on.
Hṛdayānanda: It’s crazy.
Prabhupāda: Yes, crazy. This is stated:
piśācī pāile yena mati-cchanna haya
māyā-grasta jīvera haya se bhāva udaya
“Just like when a man becomes crazy, ghostly haunted, he speaks all nonsense, similarly, anyone who is under the influence of this material energy, he’s crazy.” He’s crazy, talks all nonsense. That’s all. [break]
māyār bośe jāccho bhese’
Khāccho hābuḍubu bhāi
This is Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s… “Why you are being carried away by the waves of māyā and you are becoming drowned and sometimes up, sometimes down? Why you are wasting your life in that way?”
jīva kṛṣṇa dās e biśwās
korle to’ ār duḥkho nāi
“If you simply accept Kṛṣṇa as your guidance, there is no more māyā.” But they’ll not accept. Bahūnāṁ janmanāmante j�ānavān māṁ prapadyate [Bg. 7.19]. Therefore one who accepts and surrenders unto Kṛṣṇa after many, many births of such struggle for existence, he is actually wise. He’s actually wise.
Prajāpati: Śrīla Prabhupāda, why has it taken so long for a pure devotee to come to the West? Has the West been so sinful that no pure devotee has come before Your Divine Grace?
Prabhupāda: (laughs) Don’t be sorry. At that time you were so sinful that you could not receive a pure devotee.
Karandhara: Yes. Once in a lecture a lady asked you why hadn’t you come sooner, and you just said, “Well, you weren’t ready for me.”
Prabhupāda: Yes, “Because you were not ready.” (laughs) Yes, I told, yes. Now the Western boys, the descendants of the Western people, they are fortunate; therefore they receive Kṛṣṇa. Kona bhāgyavān jīva. It is Kṛṣṇa’s desire that “These people are suffering so much; let some devotees come here.” So you are all devotees. You have come to join together.

Prajāpati: Śrīla Prabhupāda, I once was distributing some of your literature to a library, and the librarian said, “If these are five thousand years old, where is the proof of this? Do we have the copies that were written down five thousand years ago?”
Prabhupāda: This is the proof. This is the proof. You see. But if you close your eyes… Just like if somebody says, “Now there is sunrise, light.” And if he is in darkness, he says, “Where is the proof there is light?” So, “You please come out and see.” So you read it and there will be proof.
Karandhara: Even if you don’t accept it’s five thousand years old, that doesn’t diminish the value of the books.
Prabhupāda: Simply read it. There is no question of five thousand, ten thousand, old or new. Just see what is the knowledge there. Lokasyājānato vidvāṁś cakre sātvata-saṁhitām [SB 1.7.6]. Because they are fools, for them this literature is made. Lokasyājānato vidvāṁś cakre sātvata-saṁhitām.

Hari Nam Satkirtan is the key. I have very fond memories of going out on Hari Nam in Toronto in the early days.
People would gather around us to watch and hear. Those days will return very soon. I have read somewhere that this particular incarnation of Lord Caitanya is extra special and only occurs once in a day of Lord Brahams or once every 8 billion 600 million years. Please correct me if I am wrong. No matter what is going on in the world this movement of Lord Caitanya and Srila Prabhupada cannot be stopped!! We are off the beach and moving inland!! We keep this kirtan below going 24/7 here at our Lord Jagannatha temple.
