According to the Srimad Bhagavatam the definition of virtue is – performance of sacrifices, giving of charity and undergoing severe austerities in the mode of goodness. The Pandavas were all highly qualified as pure devotees of the Lord and they were all pious in the unadulterated, highest mode of goodness.

Arjuna said to his brother King Yudhiṣṭhira:

It was by His influence only that in a fight I was able to astonish the personality of god Lord Śiva and his wife, the daughter of Mount Himalaya. Thus he [Lord Śiva] became pleased with me and awarded me his own weapon. Other demigods also delivered their respective weapons to me, and in addition I was able to reach the heavenly planets in this present body and was allowed a half-elevated seat. (S.B.1.15.12)

Purport: …..Another significance of the present verse is that Arjuna, by the grace of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, was able to reach the heavenly planet even with the selfsame body and was honored by the heavenly demigod Indradeva, being seated with him half-elevated. One can reach the heavenly planets by the pious acts recommended in the śāstras in the category of fruitive activities. And as stated in the Bhagavad-gītā (9.21), when the reactions of such pious acts are spent, the enjoyer is again degraded to this earthly planet.

The moon is also on the level with the heavenly planets, and only persons who have performed VIRTUES only- PERFORMING SACRIFICES, GIVING CHARITY AND UNDERGOING SEVERE AUSTERITIES- sacrifices, can be allowed to enter into the heavenly planets after the duration of life of the body.

“Arjuna was allowed to enter into the heavenly planets in the selfsame body simply by the grace of the Lord, otherwise it is not possible to do so. The present attempts to enter into the heavenly planets by the modern scientists will certainly prove futile because such scientists ARE NOT ON THE LEVEL OF ARJUNA. They are ORDINARY human beings, WITHOUT ANY ASSETS OF SACRIFICE, CHARITY OR AUSTERITIES.”

The material body is influenced by the three modes of material nature, namely goodness, passion and ignorance. The present population is more or less influenced by the modes of PASSION AND IGNORANCE, and the symptoms for such influence are exhibited in their becoming very LUSTY AND GREEDY.

Such degraded fellows can hardly approach the higher planetary systems. Above the heavenly planets there are many other planets also, which only those who are influenced by GOODNESS can reach. In heavenly and other planets within the universe, the inhabitants are all highly intelligent, many more times than the human beings, and they are all PIOUS in the higher and highest mode of goodness. They are ALL devotees of the Lord, and although their goodness is NOT unadulterated, STILL they are known as demigods POSSESSING THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF GOOD QUALITIES POSSIBLE WITHIN THE MATERIAL WORLD. Some conclusions:

The above sloka is from the first Volume of Srimad Bhagavatam. When Srila Prabhupada came to the US in 1965 he had already translated and printed the first 3 Cantos of the Srimad Bhagavatam. The moon issue he already resolved in writing as early as 1960, 9 years before their claiming of having gone there.

In Srila Prabhupada’s letter to Hanuman Prasad Poddar, written 2-05-70 in Los Angeles, he tells some of the history of his Srimad Bhagwatams:

“…. In 1936, my Spiritual Master left this world leaving a message for me that it would be better for me to preach in English language. So I was thinking very seriously, and then, as late as 1944 I started my paper, “Back to Godhead.” Gradually, in 1954, I retired from my family life and began to live alone in Mathura Vrindaban. In 1959, I was awarded Sannyas by one of my Godbrothers, His Holiness B.P. Kesava Maharaja.

Then I began translating Srimad-Bhagavatam in 1960; and, perhaps in 1961, I was your guest in the Gita Bagicha. You were very kind to help me partially for publishing my first volume of Srimad-Bhagavatam through the Dalmia Charitable Trust. With great difficulty, I then published the second and third volumes of Srimad-Bhagavatam until 1965, when I prepared myself to come to this country with some books.

Another point regarding the assets of virtue is that NOBODY these days is accumulating any assets of virtue, namely through the performance of sacrifices, charity and austerities in the mode of goodness. The assets of virtue are only accumulated by the performance of austerities in the mode of goodness of following the four regulative principles of freedom, namely no meat eating, intoxication, illicit sex and gambling AND the performance of sacrifice, which in Kaliyuga is the chanting of the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra.

NO politician (Putin or whosoever), NO so-called scientist, NO lawyer, No alt-media presenter, No alt-media well meaning doctor and honest scientist, No economist, NO so-called Teacher, NO king or queen of this world TODAY is thus in the Srimad Bhagavatam’s estimation virtuous. Why not? Because, to start with, they ALL eat meat, killing animals AND have created the problem in the first place AND are actively propagating AND are participating in the problem. Understanding this fundamental root cause of the problem is the very FIRST STEP in solving the problem.

Srila Prabhupada explains that modern civilization’s hunger for meat and its extensive system of vicious and barbaric slaughtering facilities bring karmic  re-actions in the form of world wars, which Śrīla Prabhupāda refers to as “slaughterhouses for humankind.”

“As Long As There Are Slaughterhouses There Will Be Wars”

At some point one has to sit back and reflect, because no matter where the alt media turns now, after 2 years, they are all running against an invisible wall, full stop. A years supply of beef jerkies and a year supply of frozen meat is their solution to the problem and to isolate yourself (just like MSM is offering as a solution for the problem). That is all they worry about, where to get meat. Some honestly suggest to spend tens of thousands of dollars on solar panels to be able to store fresh meats in their freezers. The funny thing is that they believe the hoax of meat being essential for the wellbeing of the human body, which is concocted by the very same people who came up with the present fabrications. …..Lord Buddha incarnates at a time when the people are most materialistic and preaches common-sense religious principles. Such ahiṁsā (non-violence, non-killing) is NOT a religious principle itself, but it is an IMPORTANT QUALITY for persons who are actually religious. It is a common-sense religion because one is advised to do no harm to any other animal or living being because such harmful actions are equally harmful to he who does the harm. But before learning these principles of nonviolence one has to learn two other principles, namely to be humble and to be prideless. Unless one is humble and prideless, one cannot be harmless and nonviolent. And after being nonviolent one has to learn tolerance and simplicity of living. One must offer respects to the great religious preachers and spiritual leaders and also train the senses for controlled action, learning to be unattached to family and home, and enacting devotional service to the Lord, etc. At the ultimate stage one has to accept the Lord and become His devotee; otherwise there is no religion. In religious principles there must be God in the center; otherwise simple moral instructions are merely SUBRELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES, generally known as upadharma, or NEARNESS to religious principles.

Now if the frst principle to learn is to become HUMBLE, than PRIDELESS, than HARMLESS, than NONVIOLENT, than TOLERANT, than SIMPLE IN LIVING, and so on …..how far is the collective earth population off track? Would they willingly submit and embrace these principles in exchange for a fearless and happy living situation? NO, they can and will not live without their daily dose of blood in the form of flesh. Is there a difference between drinking blood and eating meat? NO, it is the same, it is gory and inauspicious. It does not matter who and what one is, rich, poor, old, young, man or woman, Moslem, Hindu, Jew or Christian, karma does not make a distinction, same treatment for everybody as we are seeing today, corrective justice for all the slaughtered animals.

By developing the mode of goodness and accumulating in this way virtuous assets (sacrifices – charity- austerities= in this day and age following the four regulative principles- no meat eating- no intoxication- no illicit sex- no gambling) and chanting Hare Krsna, one will become pious and than one has to become a devotee of the Lord.

By analysing the present situation in the light of Srimad Bhagavatam we see that all endeavours, good ideas, individual and collective calls for justice will remain a phantasmagoria, a dream, a bubble in the ocean of mental speculation, WISHFUL THINKING if people do not stop killing innocent birds and animals for their uncontrolled tastebuds.

A Hindi Poet has said:

duḥkha se saba hari bhaje, sukha se bhaje koī
sukha se agar hari bhaje, duḥkha kāthāṅ se haya

“When one is distressed he goes to the church or temple to worship the Lord, but when opulent he forgets the Lord. Therefore, punishment by the Lord through material nature is necessary in human society, for without it men forget the supremacy of the Lord due to their dull, blunt intelligence.”

Srila Prabhupada: “I have got information from one of my Godbrothers. He is German. He told me that during wartime many Germans, they went to war, and their wives, sister, all woman class, they went to church and prayed for the return of their husband, brother or son. But they did not return, and all of them became atheists: “Oh, there is no God. There is no God.” Sometimes it happens like that, that “We want God as my order-supplier. If He does not supply the order, then He becomes no God. There is no God.” That is the defect of this kind of prayer.”

This is the version of my one German Godbrother friend. So he said that all of them became atheists. Why? They prayed so much to get back their husband or son or father: nobody came back. “Then there is no God.” This is their conclusion. That means, “God is our order supplier. God is our servant.” Just like I ask my servant or my disciple, “You do this,” and he must do it. We cannot accept God like that. God is neither going to be your servant.

So those who are going to religious life, making God as their servant, they will be failure. You must approach God as master. You should become servant. The so-called religionist, they accept God as their order-supplier servant: “I must pray to God.” Whenever there is some inconvenience, “I must pray,” or “I must… ” Not “must.” “At that time I shall pray, and then I shall finish that prayer, and God must supply. If God does not supply, then there is no God.” This is the general attitude. But that should not be done. The real religion is, as Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā, is sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekam (BG 18.66). First of all surrender. Then talk of mercy and this or that.

Bali Mardana: In Germany since they lost the war everyone has become atheists. In Germany, because they lost the war, they all became atheists.
Prabhupāda: Yes.
Yaśomatīnandana: It’s better sometimes to approach a person with no religion, Prabhupāda, than to approach a Christian.
Prabhupāda: Yes.
Yaśomatīnandana: These Christians are very blasphemous.
Prajāpati: Very blasphemous.
Prabhupāda: Yes.

They want to make God their order-supplier: “If God satisfies me in my sense gratification, then I love God. Otherwise I have no connection with Him.” That is not devotion; that is business. So business-type devotion is not real devotion to God. It may be accepted as a pious activity, not devotion. Devotion is transcendental to pious and impious activity.

GOD IS NOT OUR ORDER-SUPPLIER

“Students’ prayers 24 hours a day to listen to the political talks and desiring the war should stop is useless. God cannot be their order supplier. First of all they act sinfully, and when there is reaction of war, pestilence, famine, and so many other nature’s disturbances, they pray to God for stopping them. This is not possible. Just like a criminal first of all commits theft, burglary and debauchery, and when he is captured, by the police force, if he prays to the government to stop, that is not possible. So they are engaged in all sinful activities, and by natures’ law, there must be reaction. I am encouraging now cow killing or animal killing, and when by nature’s law, the turn comes upon me to be killed, if I pray I want to stop it, how it can be stopped? So their process is not very genuine. They want to make God as order supplier. So God is not order supplier. He is order giver. He orders everyone to surrender unto Him, and the fools and rascals who do not surrender unto Him, they want to order God in the form of so-called prayer, that He should ask material nature to stop her legal activities. That is not possible.”

Note –– The above letter is very instructive to us all.  Prabhupada is making the point about  the students  and others during the Vietnam war wanting peace, so they pray to God for peace. Yet all these millions of people are daily killing cows and other animals just for the satisfaction of their tongue, but where is the peace for those animals?  God is not our order supplier-we pray to Him- when- we want something. And the rest of the time we flat out disobey Him and kill all His subordinate creatures and then ask Maya the material energy of God, to stop these wars, economic upheavals, famines, weather disturbances, etc etc etc. The example of a criminal stealing, getting caught then praying to the government officials to just please release me. Unfortunately, for us all,  it doesn’t work that way. God is the Infinite and we are the finite-which means servant of the servant of the servant….

Just like Mr. Sulye(?), our Godbrother, German, he told me personally that during wartime many German women, some, they prayed into the church to get back their husband, son or brothers, because all went to war and nobody returned. And they become atheist: “Oh, there is no God. We prayed so much to God to get back my husband, to get back my brothers, but they are dead.” But the brother was not returned and the husband was not returned. So result was… So if we pray, go to Kṛṣṇa with that purpose, that He should be our order-supplier, then there is no question of Kṛṣṇa-bhakti. We must fully surrender, fully surrender: “Let Him do.” Āśliṣya vā. That is taught by Śrī Caitanya: Āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām marma-hatāṁ karotu vā adarśanāt [Cc. Antya 20.47]. Āśliṣya vā pāda-ratā: “Either You embrace me or You trample me down on Your feet, neglect me, and You make me broken-hearted, and not being present before me all the life…” Āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām marma-hatāṁ karotu vā. Marma-hatām means “If You make me broken-hearted… I love You so much. I want You, but You never care for me. That’s all right. Still You are my worshipable, unconditionally. I don’t want any return from You. Still You are my worshipable Deity(?).” This is pure devotion. Kṛṣṇa takes all care. (Nov 23 1966 lecture on CC NYC)
