Magic Flowers ~ Srila Prabhupada Memories, Vrindavan June 1977

I was preparing Srila Prabhupada’s garden for his arrival early one morning. I had replaced the cover on his vyasasana; turned on the Lord Brahma fountain, which he liked very much, and lit one of his favorite incense’s Kesar Chandan.(Saffron Sandlewood) I was thinking of what else I could do to make the atmosphere as pleasant as possible when I noticed a little bush in the corner of the garden with four little flowers on it. They were very fragrent little white flowers. I placed them on Srila Prabhupada’s armrest. When Srila Prabhupada arrived and took his seat he immediately picked up the flowers and smelled them. He held them for most of the morning in his left hand as he chanted japa with his right hand.

The next morning when Srila Prabhupada came into the garden and took his seat he immediately put out his hand towards me. I knew he wanted more of those little flowers without him saying a word. I had picked all of the flowers the day before and didn’t think there would be anymore but I hurried over anyway and to my surprise there were twice as many flowers as the day before. I picked them and carefully dropped them into the lotus hand of His Divine Grace and he smiled and again smelled them over and over all morning long. Krsna takes care of His devotees! Srila Prabhupada then said, “Simply by smelling this type of flowers it regulates your life airs.” Srila Prabhupada did everything with purpose; not for sense gratification but for self realization. Every day for the next month that little bush provided more and more flowers to the pure devotee. It was like magic, no ordinary plant could produce so many flowers day after day!

I was constantly amazed at the happenings around His Divine Grace, Srila Prabhupada.

Another day a peacock entered the garden and spread it’s huge beautiful tail. Usually they don’t get so close to people, just Krsna, but that peacock put on quite a show for Srila Prabhupada. I’m sure the peacock could tell Srila Prabhupada was a pure devotee of Krsna, so it felt at home around him. It reminded me of the time when Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu went to the a Jarakanda Forest and the animals began to come around and even dance on their back legs. Even the tigers danced with the deers, their usual dinner. But when the Lord Himself is there amazing things happen like magic. The same is true for the pure devotees, Krsna is always guiding and protecting them.

When Srila Prabhupada was on the Jaladutta Steam Ship to America in 1965; he had two heart attacks, but Krsna appeared to him in his dreams as the Captain of the ship and said not to worry, that He would take him to fulfill his mission of preaching Krsna Consciousness in the western world. Srila Prabhupada started the journey by the order of his Guru Maharaja, at the age of 69, when most people are already retired! Then he spent 12 years touring the world almost non-stop, spreading love of God. He wrote his books most of the night and in the afternoons between classes and preaching programs. It’s really amazing what he did, and there is no doubt in my mind that Krsna helped him every lotus step of the way.

May those memories always remain in my mind and heart.

Hoping this meets you in best of health and happiness in KC!
