Because you drink Cow’s Milk, so Cow is your Mother

Christian religion says generally, “Thou shalt not kill.” All… And especially they are killing cows. Generally killing and especially killing. First thing is why they shall kill at all? In America, oh, they have got sufficient food. So much rice, so much wheat, so much oats, fruits, grains and butter and ghee. So why they shall kill? What is the reason?

So we have created a society for killing cows and eating the meat and maintaining slaughterhouse in the name of religion. This is going on. So how we can be happy? There cannot be happiness. It is not a sentiment. Therefore this is most sinful activity, meat-eating, cow killing. Most sinful activity. And you have to suffer for that.

Unfortunately, these rascals, they do not know that what is the result of this sinful activity. They think the life will go on, and there is no more life. “After finishing of this body, everything will be finished.” Atheistic theory. Bhasmī-bhūtasya dehasya kutaḥ punar āgamano bhavet. Kutaḥ. “Oh, who is coming?” But that they do not know, rascals. We get information from Kṛṣṇa, tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ: [Bg. 2.13] “Oh, you have to accept another body after finishing this body.” But they are not responsible. They are so irresponsible, they do not care for the next life, the result of pious and sinful activities.

According to Vedic civilization, cow is to be given all protection. The Hindus or followers of the Vedic religion, why they are interested to give protection to the cows, not to the…, not so much to the other animals? And Lord Christ is more liberal. He said, “Thou shalt not kill.” He does not name any animal’s name. Every animal. Every animal should be given protection. That is also the Vedic idea. Why these poor animals should be killed? By killing, killing, killing, you become sinful and entangled. Therefore now it has begun—one is killing his own child. (abortion)

The Hindus, they say that cow-killing is irreligious. The Muhammadans say, “No, cow-killing is religious.” There is some adjustment, but… Now, in the scripture I see that the cow-killing, in some scriptures it is said that cow-killing is irreligious, and another scripture says that cow-killing is religious. So which of them I shall accept? This is ni… This is all right, or that is all right? So therefore it is said that smṛtayo vibhinnāḥ. If you consult different scriptures, you’ll find different contradictory statements. Your scripture may be different from my scripture.

Prabhupāda: Ahiṁsā, because at that time people were killing animals in the name of yajña. Just like in the Christian world the order is not to kill, but still, they are killing. So this misuse of scriptural injunction is always going on. A class of men there are who abuse the scriptural injunctions and go on with their own motive.

Sva-bhavata eva raktasya ragina puruṣasya dharma-kṛte, dharmārtham anuśāsas tataḥ mahān vyatikramaḥ(?): “So this is not good for you. It is most abominable.” Kutaḥ iti utaḥ yasyeti vākyataḥ ayaṁ mukhya dharma: “Because they will accept it as authority, and they will think this is religion.” They will not make further progress. They will stick to that principle. So therefore it is abominable. Yatasya kāma karmādi anyayena tattva-jñānena kriyamānāya(?). Tattva-jñānena. When they’ll be advised higher truth… Just like those who are addicted to killing process under the shadow of religious rights, if they are said that “You don’t kill. This is not good. After all, this living entity is as good as you are. As you are also part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa, or God, similarly, this cow, or this animal, is also part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, but he has got a different dress only. That does not mean that you should kill…” If these things are instructed for higher elevation of life, they will not accept. They will not accept. They will say, “Oh, my religion says this. So I must do it.”

Prabhupāda: Yes. Muhammadan. That was discussed between ÅšrÄ« Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Chand Kazi, the Muhammadan magistrate of Nadia. Chand Kazi was a… Maulana Chand Kazi. His name is Maulana Chand Kazi. He was a great scholar in the Koran scripture. So Caitanya Mahāprabhu first of all asked the Chand Kazi, “My dear uncle, what is your religion that you are eating your mother and father?” (laughs) So he could understand that He was attacking the cow killing process. So he said, “Well, You are just trying to criticize our cow killing, but in Your Vedic literature also I have seen that cow killing is allowed in sacrifice.” Then Lord Caitanya said, “Yes. That is not killing. That is rejuvenating. That is not killing.” The sacrifice of cow recommended in the Vedic śāstra means that the brāhmaṇas prove how powerful was Vedic mantra that it could give a new life to the old cows and bulls. Old cows were sacrificed in the fire, and again a new life was given by the Vedic mantra. But because there is lack of such expert brāhmaṇas to chant that mantra, therefore cow sacrifice in this age is forbidden. So then Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, that “Such kind of learned brāhmaṇas and Vedic yajña is not possible in this age.

Bhagavad-gita 2.13-17 — Los Angeles, November 29, 1968 : 681129BG.LA :

The first challenge was Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s, that “My dear uncle, what is your this religion that you’re eating father and mother?” That was His first challenge. And the Kazi said, “What is that? What do You mean by that?” “You are eating a bull and cow. Cow is your mother. You are drinking milk; therefore she is your mother. And the bull is helping you, producing your food, maintaining. As the father maintains you and mother gives you milk. And do you think it is good to kill them?” So Kazi, he was also learned, “Oh, Your Vedic scripture also, there is cow sacrifice.” Caitanya Mahāprabhu immediately said, “No, that is not killing. That was giving a new body to show the strength of the Vedic mantras.” A cow was sacrificed in the fire and by mantra, by chanting of the mantra, the cow will come out with a new body, young body. That was not killing. So similarly, here also, Kṛṣṇa is giving the same argument, that “You are lamenting on your grandfather. He has got old body, but if he is killed in this battle, he’ll have a new, fresh new body. So you should be joyful. Why are you lamenting?” So this argument was forwarded by Kṛṣṇa, that… Now, just like this child. This child can hope many things. He has got immense duration of life now beginning, and what hope I have got? I am now this old body, say five years or ten years more. So I cannot expect, hope anything more, than this child. So Kṛṣṇa is giving that “There is no question of lamentation for your grandfather. Your grandfather is going to have a new lease of life. Why should you be sorry?” So this argument He is forwarding, but nobody will agree to this argument. Yes. Go on.

Actually those who are meat-eater, beef-eater, they are killing their father and mother (cow and bull) and become implicated in sinful life. Therefore we say no meat-eating. No meat-eating. If you become implicated in sinful life, how you can be happy? There must be nature’s punishment.

Everyone can understand that we drink the milk of cows and take the help of bulls in producing agricultural products. Therefore, since our real father gives us food grains and our mother gives us milk with which to live, the cow and bull are considered our father and mother. According to Vedic civilization, there are seven mothers, of which the cow is one. Therefore Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu challenged the Muslim Kazi, “What kind of religious principle do you follow by killing your father and mother to eat them?” In any civilized human society, no one would dare kill his father and mother for the purpose of eating them. Therefore Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu challenged the system of Muslim religion as patricide and matricide. In the Christian religion also, a principal commandment is “Thou shalt not kill.” Nevertheless, Christians violate this rule; they are very expert in killing and in opening slaughterhouses. In our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, our first provision is that no one should be allowed to eat any kind of flesh. It does not matter whether it is cows’ flesh or goats’ flesh, but we especially stress the prohibition against cows’ flesh because according to śāstra the cow is our mother. Thus the Muslims’ cow-killing was challenged by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

When we were children, we were babies, we were depending on milk, either mother’s breast milk or cow’s milk. Therefore cow is also our mother. Just like we drink breast milk from my mother, similarly, we drink milk from mother cow. Therefore meat-eating is prohibited. You cannot kill your mother. That is a great sin. You cannot. But people have become so sinful that they have no consideration that “I am going to kill my mother. I am so ungrateful that the mother who supplied her blood to feed me, to keep me living, now I am grown-up, I am going to kill my mother.” This is my advancement of education, that “I have learned how to kill my mother.” Therefore, in every religion the killing is prohibited or very much restricted. So in your Christian religion, the first item is, “Thou shalt not kill.” But everyone is violating this first commandment. Then where is your claim to become a Christian? If you violate the injunction given by Lord Jesus Christ, then where, how you become a Christian? That is our question. Either Christian or this or that, killing is most sinful. This should be avoided.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Useful, giving milk. Most humble, useful. Even after death it is useful. And they are so rascal, they are taking care of the dog, not of the cow. Just see how they are rascals. And they are advanced, civilized. They do not know what is meant by civilization. Now, according to Vedic scripture, cow killing is sinful. It is never written, dog killing is sinful. Generally, any animal you kill, that is sinful. But especially cow killing is sinful. Go-hatya. Go-hatya. And that cow killing is going on by the Christian world, and still, they are religious. What kind of religion? Christian religion says generally, “Thou shalt not kill.” All… And especially they are killing cows. Generally killing and especially killing. Prabhupāda: Anyone who takes milk… Everyone takes milk. The cow is the mother. Mother gives milk. And mother, when she cannot supply milk, mother should be cut up. Is that a very good philosophy? Is it human philosophy? What is the answer? But if you say that somebody wants to, say in your country majority they want to eat meat. So, if you put that argument, then you can eat some lower animals. You can eat the pigs. You are eating also, pigs. Not in a massive scale. Massive scale—if you are Christian you should follow your religious scripture: “Thou shall not kill!” This should be the principle. But if you are a rākṣasa, if you want to eat meat, then at least don’t kill the cows. You can eat other, insignificant animals. You are eating also. You are eating everything. Except the moving cars, you are eating all the moving animals. The car also moves, but you cannot eat. Otherwise you are killing everything. You have become so civilized rascal that your business is to kill other animals and eat. You are so civilized. You are still in the crude form of human being, just like in the jungles, the aborigines, the Africans, they do not know how to develop civilization—crude methods, eating the animals. That also, they are not so uncivilized that they keep slaughterhouses. You are so uncivilized that you are keeping slaughterhouses, regularly. These Africans and other jungle people they eat meat, but they directly kill. They have no such civilization as to maintain a slaughterhouse. The tigers eat meat, but they do not keep a slaughterhouse. And you are civilized. You are keeping slaughterhouse. Why should you keep? The government shouldn’t allow you to keep slaughterhouses. If anyone wants to eat meat, let them eat like tigers and others. Individually, kill one animal—a lower animal, not cows. This should be the government law. You can kill one insignificant animal, like pigs or goats. It has not very much use. You kill it in your home, before your children and family, and eat. THe government may not have any objection. But why should you maintain slaughterhouses? So the agriculturist and the mercantile men, they should produce enough food, give protection to the cows, and if there is excess, sell it. Where there is not enough food grain produced you can make business. That is the instruction given in Bhagavad-gītā, kṛṣi-go-rakṣya vāṇijyam [Bg. 18.44]. That is really needed. Nobody is interested. Everyone comes to the city, the mercantile class. They are doing business, big, big skyscraper building, and they have artificial money, paper. And instead of eating food grains they are maintaining slaughterhouses. This is not good civilization. Hare Kṛṣṇa. (end)
