EUROPE – The European Union has granted Novel Food authorizations to house crickets (Acheta domesticus) and yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) following a three-year evaluation process that deemed them safe for human consumption.
The two insect species have been approved as high protein food ingredients across a broad range of European Food and Beverage (F&B) platforms, including multigrain bread rolls, dried pasta products, “beer-like” alcoholic beverages and chocolate confectionery.
The European Union recently allowed Acheta Domesticus, better known as the house cricket, to show up on European Union consumers’ tables. The newly approved regulation will allow food producers to introduce the partially defatted powder of Acheta Domesticus to the E.U. food market.
The E.U. Commission passed the application presented in 2019 by the Cricket One Company. Now, food producers can use the powder in the production of several foods, including pizza and pasta-based products, nuts and oilseeds, snacks and sauces, meat preparations and soups, multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable-based dishes, whey powder, maize flour-based snacks, beer-like beverages and chocolate confectionery.

Yesterday, the Commission authorised the marketing of house crickets (Acheta domesticus) as novel food in the EU. It is the third insect which has been successfully approved for consumption and follows previous authorisations given last July for the dried yellow mealworm, and in November for the migratory locust. The house cricket will be available in its entirety, either frozen or dried, and powder. This authorisation was endorsed by the Member States on 8 December 2021, following a stringent assessment by the European Food Safety Agency which concluded that the consumption of this insect is safe under the uses submitted by the applicant company. Products containing this novel food will be labelled appropriately to flag any potential allergic reactions. In recent years, the Food and Agriculture Organization has found that insects are a nutritious and healthy food source with high fat, protein, vitamin, fibre and mineral content. Moreover, insects make up a substantial part of the daily diet of hundreds of millions of people around the world. On 24 July 2019, the company Cricket One Co. Ltd (‘the applicant’) submitted an application to the Commission for an authorisation in accordance with Article 10(1) of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 to place Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder on the Union market as a novel food. The application requested for partially defatted powder obtained from whole Acheta domesticus (house cricket) to be used in multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, dry stuffed and non-stuffed pasta-based products, sauces, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable- based dishes, pizza, pasta-based products, whey powder, meat analogues, soups and soup concentrates or powders, maize flour-based snacks, beer-like beverages, chocolate confectionary, nuts and oilseeds, snacks other than chips, and meat preparations, intended for the general population.
Description/Definition: house crickets (Acheta domesticus)
The novel food consists of the frozen, paste, dried, and powder forms of the whole lesser mealworm. The term “lesser mealworm” refers to the larval form of Alphitobius diaperinus, an insect species that belongs to the family of Tenebrionidae (darkling beetles).
The entire lesser mealworms are meant for human consumption, no parts are removed.
The novel food is intended to be marketed in 4 different forms, namely: (i) whole blanched and frozen A. diaperinus larvae (ADL frozen), (ii) paste from whole blanched, ground, and frozen A. diaperinus larvae (ADL paste), (iii) whole blanched, and freeze-dried A. diaperinus larvae (ADL dried), and (iv) powder from whole blanched, freeze-dried and ground A. diaperinus larvae (ADL powder).
A minimum 24 hours fasting period is required to allow the larvae to discard their bowel content before killing the insects by a thermal treatment.
