   Analysis of Srila Prabhupada’s Letter to Rupanuga

   Dec 3, UK (SUN) — Please read the following letter from Srila Prabhupada to Rupanuga, April 28, 1974. My analysis follows below:

   “You are right about Sridhara Maharaja’s genuineness. But in my opinion he is the best of the lot. He is my old friend, AT LEAST HE EXECUTES THE REGULATIVE PRINCIPLES OF DEVOTIONAL SERVICE. I do not wish to discuss about activities of my Godbrothers but it is a fact they have no life for preaching work. All are satisfied with a place for residence in the name of a temple, they engage disciples to get foodstuff by transcendental devices and eat and sleep. They have no idea or brain how to broadcast the cult of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.”

   My Guru Maharaja used to lament many times for this reason and he thought if one man at least had understood the principle of preaching then his mission would achieve success. In the latter days of my Guru Maharaja he was very disgusted. Actually, he left this world earlier, otherwise he would have continued to live for more years. Still he requested his disciples to form a strong Governing body for preaching the cult of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. HE NEVER RECOMMENDED ANYONE TO BE ACARYA OF THE GAUDIYA MATH. BUT SRIDHARA MAHARAJA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DISOBEYING THIS ORDER OF GURU MAHARAJA, AND HE AND OTHERS WHO ARE ALREADY DEAD UNNECESSARILY THOUGHT THAT THERE MUST BE ONE ACARYA. If Guru Maharaja could have seen someone who was qualified at that time to be acarya he would have mentioned. Because on the night before he passed away he talked of so many things, but never mentioned an acarya. His idea was acarya was not to be nominated amongst the governing body. He said openly you make a GBC and conduct the mission. So his idea was amongst the members of GBC who would come out successful and self effulgent acarya would be automatically selected. So Sridhara Maharaja and his two associate gentlemen unauthorizedly selected one acarya and later it proved a failure. THE RESULT IS NOW EVERYONE IS CLAIMING TO BE ACARYA EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY BE KANISTHA ADHIKARI WITH NO ABILITY TO PREACH. IN SOME OF THE CAMPS THE ACARYA IS BEING CHANGED THREE TIMES A YEAR. THEREFORE WE MAY NOT COMMIT THE SAME MISTAKE IN OUR ISKCON CAMP. ACTUALLY AMONGST MY GODBROTHERS NO ONE IS QUALIFIED TO BECOME ACARYA. SO IT IS BETTER NOT TO MIX WITH MY GODBROTHERS VERY INTIMATELY BECAUSE INSTEAD OF INSPIRING OUR STUDENTS AND DISCIPLES THEY MAY SOMETIMES POLLUTE THEM. This attempt was made previously by them, especially Madhava Maharaja and Tirtha Maharaja and Bon Maharaja but somehow or other I saved the situation. This is going on. We shall be very careful about them and not mix with them. This is my instruction to you all. They cannot help us in our movement, but they are very competent to harm our natural progress. So we must be very careful about them.”

   In this letter Srila Prabhupada gives a HUGE amount of information.

   1) Notice how he gives Sridhara Maharaja credit – for ONLY- AT LEAST HE EXECUTES THE REGULATIVE PRINCIPLES-so we can understand Sridhara Maharaja was NOT on prema bhakti level he was on REGULATIVE PRINCIPLES platform (Sadhana bhakti). The word AT LEAST means other Godbrothers did NOT even execute Regulative Principles.

   2) Srila Prabhupada says, AMONGST MY GODBROTHERS NO ONE IS QUALIFIED TO BECOME ACARYA. If Srila Prabhupada’s Godbrothers were NOT qualified – ANY of THEIR disciples most certainly could NOT be fit to give Diksa either. Please see Diksa understanding in my article: “Diksa Given to Madhyama-adhikari is Not a Formality”.

   3) How can a person disobey the Guru and become Guru? Srila Prabhupada’s Godbrothers disobeyed THEIR Guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.

   4) Srila Prabhupada further states THEY MAY BE KANISTHA ADHIKARI – this “MAYBE” means it is doubtful they were even on a Kanistha Adhikari platform, which requires one to be a FULLY QUALIFIED BRAHMANA. This PROVED they lacked the Brahminical quality of truthfulness. They were dishonest, they PRETENDED to give DIKSA under the false guise of being Guru.

   Srila Prabhupada Room Conversation, February 14, 1977 in Mayapur:

   Prabhupada: Kanistha-adhikari means he must be a brahmana. That is kanistha-adhikari. The spiritual life, kanistha-adhikari, means he must be a QUALIFIED brahmana. That is kanistha. What is esteemed as very high position in the material world, brahmana, that is kanistha-adhikari.

   arcayam eva haraye
   pujam yah sraddhayehate
   na tad-bhaktesu canyesu
   sa bhaktah prakrtah smrtah

   The brahmana means from the material stage gradually he is elevated to the spiritual stage. AND BELOW THE BRAHMANA THERE IS NO QUESTION OF VAISNAVA.

   Srila Prabhupada KNEW the mentality of some of his “disciples” FULLY well-this is why he says THEREFORE WE MAY NOT COMMIT THE SAME MISTAKE IN OUR ISKCON CAMP-they all had the same ACARYA disease. As a Representative of the Supersoul, he could FULLY understand their desire was to be worshipped as ACARYA (Vyasa puja is prerogative of the Acarya ONLY). To SAVE the devotees from such offensive actions Srila Prabhupada signed — ordered and set-up — the Ritvik System on 9th July 1977, which incidentally was NEVER REVOKED by him.

The pseudo religionists have neither knowledge nor detachment from material affairs, for most of them want to live in the golden shackles of material bondage under the shadow of philanthropic activities disguised as religious principles. THEY IGNORE THE VEDIC INJUNCTION ACARYOPASANA–“ONE MUST WORSHIP THE ACARYA”–and Krsna’s statement in the Bhagavad-gita (4.2) evam parampara-praptam, “This supreme science of God is received through the disciplic succession.” INSTEAD, TO MISLEAD THE PEOPLE IN GENERAL THEY THEMSELVES BECOME SO-CALLED ACARYAS, BUT THEY DO NOT EVEN FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES OF THE ACARYAS.
   THESE ROGUES ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS ELEMENTS IN HUMAN SOCIETY. BECAUSE THERE IS NO RELIGIOUS GOVERNMENT, THEY ESCAPE PUNISHMENT BY THE LAW OF THE STATE. THEY CANNOT, HOWEVER, ESCAPE THE LAW OF THE SUPREME, WHO HAS CLEARLY DECLARED IN THE BHAGAVAD-GITA THAT ENVIOUS DEMONS IN THE GARB OF RELIGIOUS PROPAGANDISTS SHALL BE THROWN INTO THE DARKEST REGIONS OF HELL (BG. 16.19-20).    KB 64 The Story of King Nrga
   At this time, Lord Krsna was present among His relatives who were members of the ksatriya class. To teach them through the exemplary character of King Nrga, He said: “Even though a ksatriya king may be as powerful as fire, it is not possible for him to usurp the property of a brahmana and utilize it for his own purpose. If this is so, how can ordinary kings, who falsely think of themselves the most powerful beings within the material world, usurp a brahmana’s property? I do not think that taking poison is as dangerous as taking a brahmana’s property. For ordinary poison there is treatment–one can be relieved from its effects; BUT IF ONE DRINKS THE POISON OF TAKING A BRAHMANA’S PROPERTY, THERE IS NO REMEDY FOR THE MISTAKE. The perfect example was King Nrga. He was very powerful and very pious, but due to the small mistake of unknowingly usurping a brahmana’s cow, he was condemned to the abominable life of a lizard. Ordinary poison affects only those who drink it, and ordinary fire can be extinguished simply by pouring water on it; but the arani fire ignited by the spiritual potency of a brahmana can burn to ashes the whole family of a person who provokes such a brahmana.” (Formerly, the brahmanas used to ignite the fire of sacrifice not with matches or any other external fire but with their powerful mantras, called arani.) “IF SOMEONE EVEN TOUCHES A BRAHMANA’S PROPERTY, HE IS RUINED FOR THREE GENERATIONS. HOWEVER, IF A BRAHMANA’S PROPERTY IS FORCIBLY TAKEN AWAY, THE TAKER’S FAMILY FOR TEN GENERATIONS BEFORE HIM AND FOR TEN GENERATIONS AFTER HIM WILL BE SUBJECT TO RUINATION. On the other hand, if someone becomes a Vaisnava or devotee of the Lord, ten generations of his family before his birth and ten generations after will become liberated.”
   Lord Krsna continued: “IF SOME FOOLISH KING WHO IS PUFFED UP BY HIS WEALTH, PRESTIGE AND POWER WANTS TO USURP A BRAHMANA’S PROPERTY, IT SHOULD BE UNDERSTOOD THAT SUCH A KING IS CLEARING HIS PATH TO HELL; HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW MUCH HE HAS TO SUFFER FOR SUCH UNWISE ACTION. IF SOMEONE TAKES AWAY THE PROPERTY OF A VERY LIBERAL BRAHMANA WHO IS ENCUMBERED BY A LARGE DEPENDENT FAMILY, THEN SUCH A USURPER IS PUT INTO THE HELL KNOWN AS KUMBHIPAKA; NOT ONLY IS HE PUT INTO THIS HELL, BUT HIS FAMILY MEMBERS ALSO HAVE TO ACCEPT SUCH A MISERABLE CONDITION OF LIFE. A PERSON WHO TAKES AWAY PROPERTY WHICH HAS EITHER BEEN AWARDED TO A BRAHMANA OR GIVEN AWAY BY HIM IS CONDEMNED TO LIVE FOR AT LEAST 60,000 YEARS AS MISERABLY AS AN INSECT IN STOOL. THEREFORE I INSTRUCT YOU, ALL MY BOYS AND RELATIVES PRESENT HERE, DO NOT, EVEN BY MISTAKE, TAKE THE POSSESSION OF A BRAHMANA AND THEREBY POLLUTE YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. IF SOMEONE EVEN WISHES TO POSSESS SUCH PROPERTY, LET ALONE ATTEMPTS TO TAKE IT AWAY BY FORCE, THE DURATION OF HIS LIFE WILL BE REDUCED. HE WILL BE DEFEATED BY HIS ENEMIES, AND AFTER BEING BEREFT OF HIS ROYAL POSITION, WHEN HE GIVES UP HIS BODY HE WILL BECOME A SERPENT. A serpant gives trouble to all other living entities. My dear boys and relatives, I therefore advise you that even if a brahmana becomes angry with you and calls you by ill names or cuts you, still you should not retaliate. On the contrary, you should smile, tolerate him and offer your respects to the brahmana. You know very well that even I Myself offer My obeisances to the brahmanas with great respect three times daily. You should therefore follow My instruction and example. I shall not forgive anyone who does not follow them, and I shall punish him. You should learn from the example of King Nrga that even if someone unknowingly usurps the property of a brahmana, he is put into a miserable condition of life.”
   Thus Lord Krsna, who is always engaged in purifying the conditioned living entities, gave instruction not only to His family members and the inhabitants of Dvaraka, but to all the members of human society.

He was a great sage, but sometimes in his asrama, some thieves were caught, so police arrested both the Manduka Muni and the thieves, and later on Manduka Muni was chastised to be punished by sula. There was a system of punishment. I do not whether (it is) still existing. The sula means one lance, lancer. Lancer, it is called?
   Devotee: Yes.
   Prabhupada: It was to be pierced through the rectum and it will go through the head and the man will die. The pierce was standing, and he was to sit down. What is this punishment? Is there any mention?
   Pusta-krsna: I never heard of anything.
   Guru-gauranga: Arabians have this. It is called pala(?).
   Prabhupada: Sula punishment. So when he was condemned to the sula punishment, then the king heard that “Manduka Muni, the great sage, he is punished like that?” Immediately he stopped. “What is this nonsense that Manduka Muni has been punished? He is a great sage.” So the king stopped the punishment and immediately came to see what has happened. Then he was immediately released. But he was very sorry, that “Why the judge Yamaraja punished him like that?” So he asked Yamaraja, “Why you have punished me like this?” “Now, in your childhood you pierced the rectum of an ant with a…,” what is called?
   Devotees: Pin, straw.
   Prabhupada: No, not straw. Prick, pricking?
   Devotee: Pin.
   Prabhupada: Kanta, kanta. We say kanta, that pricks. What is called?
   Devotees: Thorn.
   Prabhupada: Ah, thorn, yes. So therefore he was punished. Now just see. In his childhood he was playing with an ant, piercing the rectum with a thorn. That is also taken account, “All right. You will be punished.” Just see how finer laws are there in nature. So the Manduka Muni did that. Therefore it was recorded he should be punished like that.
   This is our position. Anything… If you are walking on the street, if you kill an ant by walking, you will be punished. This is nature’s law. We are in such a dangerous position. In every movement there is punishment. Now, if you believe the sastras, that is different thing. If you don’t believe, then do anything you like. But from sastra we can understand the laws of nature, or God, is very, very strict, very, very strict.

Just like the Christian people, they go to the church, confession: “Sir, I did this, all these sinful activities last week.” “All right, pay me something.” Again, from Monday, beginning sinful activities; come on Sunday. These are not allowed. You can be excused, but don’t do again. If you continue to do it, that is not very… Then you have to suffer. Once or twice, you may be excused. BUT IF YOU CONTINUE TO DO THAT, YOU MUST BE PUNISHED. NAMNO BALAD YASYA HI PAPA-BUDDHIH.

God can counteract anything, or God’s representative can do that. But again just coming from the church again I begin the same thing? It is the gravest type of sinful act. That is the Vedic injunction. Namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih. ANYONE WHO COMMITS SIN ON THE STRENGTH OF CHANTING THE HOLY NAME OF VISNU, OH, HIS SINFUL ACTIVITIES CANNOT BE VANQUISHED EVEN BY SO MUCH ATTEMPT PERFORMING SACRIFICES OR PENANCES. NO IT IS NOT POSSIBLE. HE’S CONDEMNED. JUST LIKE YOU HAVE COMMITTED SOME CRIMINAL ACT, AND YOU ARE PRESENTED IN THE COURT, AND YOU SAY, “MY LORD, I DID NOT KNOW THIS ACT. I HAVE COMMITTED THIS. I MAY BE EXCUSED. I’LL NOT DO THIS.” THEN YOU ARE EXCUSED, THERE IS A… “THAT’S ALL RIGHT.” BUT IF YOU ARE EXCUSED AND AGAIN COME BACK AND AGAIN DO THE SAME SINFUL ACTIVITIES, CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES, AND IF YOU ARE AGAIN ARRESTED, THEN YOU’LL BE VERY, VERY SEVERELY PUNISHED. IT IS A COMMON SENSE. How people think that “Because I chant Hare Krsna or I take the holy name of God or I go to church, therefore I can commit so much sins, never mind. It will be counteracted next week or next moment when I shall chant.” This is one of the gravest offense in chanting Hare Krsna mantra.

Mrtyu-samsara-vartmani: “Again in the cycle of birth and death, birth and death.” Again, after millions and millions of years, he’ll come, again get the chance of human body, another chance to know. So this is the chance to know. YOU CANNOT EXPECT THE DOG WILL KNOW, THE CAT WILL KNOW. YOU HAVE GOT HUMAN BEING. YOU MUST KNOW. THE SIGNBOARD, “KEEP TO THE LEFT,” IS MEANT FOR THE HUMAN BEING. IF THE DOG GOES FROM RIGHT TO THE LEFT, HE IS NOT TO BE PUNISHED, BECAUSE HE HAS NO KNOWLEDGE. THIS IS COMMON SENSE. BUT YOU CANNOT NEGLECT. YOU ARE HUMAN BEING. YOU CANNOT SAY, “I DID NOT SEE THE SIGNBOARD. I DID NOT KNOW THE LAW. THEREFORE, BY CHANCE, I HAVE VIOLATED.” NO. NO “BY CHANCE.” YOU MUST BE PUNISHED. This is the responsibility of… Narottama dasa Thakura, therefore, sings, hari hari bifale, janama gonainu: “I have wasted my time.” How? Manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya: “I got this human form of life. I did not know what is Radha-Krsna.” Janiya suniya visa khainu: “Knowingly, I have taken poison.” A human being, if he does not become Krsna conscious, that means knowingly, he is taking poison, and he must die. Janiya suniya visa khainu. Sometimes I do not know what is poison. Just like child does not know. He may take. But he’ll not be excused. Even a child takes poison, it does not mean the nature’s law will excuse him. No. But…. What to speak of child, a human being, if he takes poison, janiya suniya, then what is to be…? So in the human form of life, you cannot neglect the instruction of Bhagavan. Then you’ll be punished. Severe punishment. Tan aham dvisatah kruran ksipamy ajasram andha-yonisu.
